Introduction

Okay, this is a little lame but I loved the Gilmore Girls! I watched every episode at least once. Oh yeah, I turned my nose up for the first three seasons. I was too sophisticated to get sucked into a silly girly show. Then a co-worker talked me into just trying the first disc of the first season. I was hooked!! And here is why...

The writing

Snappy, extremely fast-paced dialogue.

The main characters

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore; smart, witty, funny and so much more.
Luke, Lorelai's love interest; Richard and Emily, her parents; Lane & Paris, Rory's best friends.

The quirky friends and neighbors

The show is full of crazy and eccentric people; each adding their own idiosyncrasies to the stories.

Stars Hollow

The perfect New England town; in the center of the town is a village green or town square, complete with gazebo where wonderful town events occur. It's supposedly in Connecticut and modeled after Washington Depot, a town the creator of the show once traveled through.

The Mom

Got pregnant at 16, left her wealthy parents home, ended up as a maid at an inn in Stars Hollow. Raised the baby on her own, worked her way up to the inn manager while getting a business degree. Doesn't want any part of her parents staid, elite life. Rory gets accepted to a private school and Lorelai makes a deal with her parents; dinner every Friday night if they will loan her the money for the tuition.

The Daughter

Brilliant and well read in a nice and funny kind of way. You know, the way no person could really be. She starts at Stars Hollow High, gets accepted to Chilton Academy an elite private school. Her dream is to go to Harvard, gets accepted to both Harvard and Yale, chooses Yale - her grandparents alma mater.

The Relationship

Luke's Diner

Don't we all wish we had a place to go; good food, comfortable, homey, where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came (oh, wait, different show).
Great coffee, pastries, fries and Luke's butt to ogle.

The guest stars

Madeleine Albright (64th United States Secretary of State and first woman to
hold that position) as Lorelai Gilmore in Rory's dream

Christiane Amanpour (chief international correspondent for CNN) as herself,

Paul Anka (Singer) as himself

The Bangles (early '80s all-women band) as themselves

Barbara Levy Boxer (D-California) (American politician and the current junior U.S. Senator from the State of California) as herself,

Carole King as music store owner, Sophie Bloom

Norman Kingsley Mailer as himself,

Seth McFarlane Emmy-winning American animator, screenwriter, producer, director, and voice actor and creator of Family Guy

Doug Ose , former Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005, representing the 3rd District of California as himself

Marion Ross as Lorelai "Trix" Gilmore and her niece Marilyn

* The Shins (Indie Rock Band) as themselves
* Sonic Youth (Rock Band)
* Yo la Tengo (Rock Band)
* Sparks (Rock Band)

Pop Culture Hit

In an episode of Family Guy, Lorelai and Rory are depicted talking really fast to end making out with each other.

In the fifth episode of the first season of Six Feet Under, Claire and Ruth are watching the show with some relatives.

One episode of MADtv featured a parody of Gilmore Girls called "The Gabmore Girls" which spoofs its fast talking and feel-good joyfulness by showing them talking fast for long periods of time and then making snow angels.

In an episode of Scrubs [Episode 517: My Chopped Liver, Season 5], it's revealed that Turk and J.D. watch the show on their night off. After watching the show, Turk calls J.D. over the phone to discuss it.

Turk: "Mothers and daughters... they speak so fast, but they speak so true."
J.D.: "I'm so mad at Lorelai, I can't even talk right now."

In another episode of Scrubs Ted is found hanging upside down in his office. He asks what day it is and when he find out it is Wednesday he says "Oh man! I missed the Gilmore Girls!"

In an episode of Will & Grace, Jack is talking to Karen about Stan's mistress Lorraine Finster saying "We hate her! We hate her even more than the know-it-all daughter on the Gilmore Girls!"

In episode 1.02 of "Greek", Cappie says "How about we all be mature and say what's really on our minds. How the hell could they cancel the Gilmore Girls?!?!"

In the sixth seasons of Girlfriends and Gilmore Girls, the shows referenced each other. In Girlfriends, the character Joan Clayton mentions that she lives near a Gilmore Girl. In Gilmore Girls, Lorelai makes fun of Christopher's selection of saved TiVo programs, one of them being Girlfriends.

In episode 3.15 of Veronica Mars, Wallace is seen reporting on Logan and Parker's lunchtime tête-à-tête to a bemused Veronica,

Wallace: "What?"
Veronica: "I'm just trying to figure out which Gilmore Girl you are."

In the 2006 movie Accepted, the character of "Rory" has a breakdown over not getting into Yale.

In the 2007 movie Blades of Glory, Will Farrell's character, Chazz Michael Michaels, calls Jon Heder's character, Jimmy MacElroy, and tells him that he taped "The Gilmore Girls" for him.

In Joey, he once says that he just passed a "Gilmore Girls" set and wanted a relationship like that with his mother

In the 2007 TMNT film, right after Splinter turns on the television to "watch his stories," the news reporter says "we interrupt 'The Gilmore Girls' for this special news report."

In an episode of ABC Family's Greek, Cappie refrences Gilmore Girls in an awkward moment with ex-girlfriend Casey and new boyfriend Evan

Cappie: "Can we be mature and just all say what we're thinking?...How the hell could they cancel Gilmore Girls?!"

I'm just sayin...

Thank goodness I got my nose out of the air and gave this one a try. I have seasons 1 - 6 and will get 7 soon. The son watched these with me, we marathoned them one summer and had a blast. Also not his usual type of show, he is a Scrubs, Family Guy, Simpsons, Firefly, Angel / Buffy - kind of guy. Not a sweet show about a mom and daughter. But, he loved the writing. Amy Sherman-Palladino created some great characters and wrote some wonderful stories and dialog. If you haven't already; you might give it a try. I'm just sayin...

I'm giving you 5 stars, but this is the equivalent of a chick flick, just on T.V.

I don't want to watch this girlyl-girly show! Change the channel. Aren't there any westerns on? You know, something with good guys and bad guys and horses and guns and Indians? Since the channel seems to be stuck here, I'm leaving. Hi-ho, Silver, away!
