small, laid-back town with a great waterfall that's just a short hike away.

mal pais
surfer town. great beaches. surprisingly good ethnic food, as well.

playa negra
more surfing. hardly anything else. perfect.

monteverde
small town set in some beautiful hills. main attraction is the zipline canopy tours through the rainforest treetops. a must-do.

la fortuna
volcanos. rainforest hikes. hot springs. huge lake. the theme here is "outdoor adventure."

cahuita
carribean flair...lots of reggae. relaxing. great place to snorkel, too.

puerto viejo
more surfing. lots of great bars and restaurants. beautiful caribbean setting. some good shopping, too.

manzanillo
tiny. literally one bar. maybe 4 places to eat. perfect. gorgeous, gorgeous beaches.
i new a guy in high school that went to costa rica on a two week surf trip, he came back about seven years later with a wife and few kids. tough place to want to leave, as i understand.
