Things to do when you are stuck in Maine for four months

Introduction

In 1986 the hubband got sent to Maine by the USDA for four months. So off we go: me 3 months pregnant, the 3 year old son and the Geezer. He is stationed Ellsworth, ME. the last town before you cross the bridge to Mt. Desert Island / Bar Harbor. We were there from the end of May through mid-September.

Turn on the heat

I'm from Arizona. May in Maine is the same as December in AZ. We told the landlord I was baking, thus using so much gas; he brought by some baking pans for me. Sweet guy. Bought the son a little wading pool. It never warmed up enough for him to get in, but the frogs liked it.

Eat Lobster

OMG you could get an entire lobster, freshly boiled with fries for about $6.00 at the local lobster pounds. Looking at the empty carcasses made me puke what I had just eaten, but it was only $6 so I could eat again.

Visit Bar Harbor

That's Baah Haahba.
And Seal Harbor and Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor and Seal Cove and Goose Cove; well you get the idea - lots of watery places. Bass Harbor has a Coast Guard station, that's kind of cool.

All this water and no place to swim

There is one beach in the area. Sand Beach. Took the kid, in jeans and a long sleeve shirt, he waded and shivered.

Thunder Hole

Thunder Hole is a geographical "notch" carved into the shorline cliff, which, under the right conditions, produces a resounding "thump" and 20-foot high splash as the surf enters its narrow inlet.

Cadillac Mountain

Wonderful views - almost got blown away. We literally had to hang on to the kid.

Mt. Desert Island / Acadia National Park

Is fabulous. Beautiful sea and country side. Great towns with quaint restaurants and shops. All you could hope for in a four month vacation.

Except

The hubband had to work. I was feeling puny due to the pregnancy and I had a three year old to entertain in a rented house with a newly installed bath. They put the bathroom in a closet. The shower stall was made for a travel trailer.

Our weekends were great. Our weekdays a little less great. The highlight of the day was going into Ellsworth and checking the post office box, eating chicken tenders at BK, playing on the playground, going to the library, and driving back to our house. We had to be on the watch for bears - no, we really did. Our rental was in the country, next to an old apple orchard and the bears would come for the apples. I got very strict bear instructions from the landlord.

And then...

you can visit St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. A wonderful little town in New Brunswick. If I remember the history, they were British Loyalists who moved their town to Canada after the Revolutionary war. And it has the highest tides anywhere. Very Cool!

Or...

you can hop on a ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. That was a great time. My mom, sister and I did this and had a ball.

Since you are close to

Boston and your mom is from there, the whole family makes an excursion to her old home town while she is visiting. It was wonderful, first meeting some of her family then checking our Filene's basement, The Constitution, the Boston Public Garden and Swan Boats, Harvard, Faneuil Hall and on and on. Probably one of my favorite things while in Maine.

Magic

This was a magical time and I regret the son has very few memories. He was just too young. But if you ever get up Ellsworth way, there is plenty to do.
