Introduction
Many people think that there is a Springfield in every state. Not so. Although there should be. In doing research I found that there are 26 states with Springfields that have census data. However there are an additional nine states where I found Springfields on Mapquest but no census data or incorporation to support their existence.
These states have dubious Springfields: Alabama, California, Delaware, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas
These states have no Springfield: Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.
I also found a few states who liked Springfield so much they had multiple Springfields.

In 1871 the main line of the Oregon and California Railroad bypassed Springfield for Eugene. The story goes that a group of prominent Eugene businessmen paid railroad financier, Ben Holladay, $40,000 to bypass Springfield by crossing the Willamette River near Harrisburg instead of Springfield. Thus began a rivalry that lasts up to the present day.
