Spam. An obvious choice.
consumerist.com/consumer/knowing-is-half-the-batt…
It doesn't personally bother me as I work with (read: fix and remove)spyware, malware and viruses and know the signs of bullshit.
"Ars Technica quotes a recent study by Microsoft that found that 58% of American consumers didn't even know "online threats" existed." ( copied from the consumerist. article in link above.
This stat scares me. No wonder spammers are making millions.
this is the number 1 problem..... period.
Stop the stupidity.... educated yourself.

Anti Virus Companies. Namely Norton.
They preach and preach.... and use valuable resources. I won't rant..... click the links and learn.
3
Digital Right's Management.
DRM doesn't work... and it never will. For every brainiac programmer that encodes a new type of DRM, there are a hundred SMARTER hackers that will break it... usually within a week's time.
It also impedes usage by actual honest users.
The link above is Itunes specific... but you should know if you purchase musci online.

Porn. No matter how hard you try to avoid it... it finds you!!!!!!!!!
Not that there is anything wrong with smut :)
6
Latency. Having to wait for some old, slow ass server in the middle of nowhere ticks me off.
7
Nosey Government Agencies.
Trust me... If they want to, they will monitor you. Window's Operating Systems all have a back door. don't think for a minute that they don't have the keys to that door... even if Microsoft didn't give it to them.
A good thing to track down kiddie porn creeps...... but bad for people who speak out against the government.

Annoying Smilies that make noise and do everything BUT smile.
THANKFULLY..... I have my Firefox browser tweaked enough that I rarely see those annoying advertisements for them.
9
Tracking Cookies. I just hate nosy companies.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie
Delete your cookies often. I do mine manually at least twice a day. Protect the ones you need (sopping cart info or login info)...turf the rest.
Ever wonder why wherever you surf, the ads are almost "tailored" to your interests. That is because they are.

Websites that BLAST music at you, and have no off switch.
And you are a geek; just imagine how all of the rest of us computer schlumps feel.
Spam - not bad at home; horrible at work (200ish a day); Norton Internet 2007, which we are required to use has an add-on Anti-Spam that quit working after about 3 mos. - POOP!
Cookies - Is there a way to auto delete them daily? Why would I want to keep any?
Emails that blast music - friends send stuff to the work e-address and don't warn me about the music; I open and the next thing I know the boss is at my desk asking, "what was that?"

Norton is crap... sorry to hear you are stuck with it at work.
What are you surfing with Pam? IE 7? IE 6? GULP....IE 5??? You probably told me this once...... sorry... it's the swiss cheese memory thing.
There is no automatic way with Internet Explorer that I know of.
Here's how to do them manually....
on your taskbar...
Click Tools...
Click Internet Options...
Select the General tab, it's probably selected by default......
Look for "browsing history"...click the delete button...
they are gone.
Firefox will easily do this for you.....automatically.
Firefox Rocks!! It's easy, safe, and FREE!
Plus it has better toys :)
get it here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
any help you need if you try Firefox is not a problem.... I'd be happy to help :)

I use Firefox at home and have for a couple of years. I've just never tried any of the goodies that come with it.

Firefox!!! COOL.....good girl!!!
O.K., follow these steps...
click the tools tab in your taskbar......
click options.......
click on the Security tab (on the top right side)
click the checkbox "always clear my private data when I close firefox".... you want this enabled.
Do not select the next option "always ask before deleting history?" .... this will get on your nerves and isn't necessary.
You should grab a cookie manager.....View Cookies CS is my favorite.
get it here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=view+cookies&st-
atus=4
it will ask you to restart firefox.
you can now find View Cookies CS located under the "tools" button in your taskbar.
it's super easy :)

Ok, I checked out the #2 links. I don't understand what this is telling me. Does this mean that I have to scan everything as it comes in? I'm not trying to be stupid, just make sure I know what I'm doing before I do it. If I had done that I wouldn't have had to marry the Geezer.
"Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware."

Yes. Manually scan the file before you open it. Like any other virus scanner, simply right click over the file you downloaded and select "scan with clamwin", then it will be scanned.
Now. If you install the "download statusbar" add on for firefox, you can tell it to scan automatically for you with the clamwin antivirus.
I always scan twice... I let it autoscan with the statusbar plugin, then before I open the download again manually.
Paranoid? Maybe :) But I haven't gotten infected........yet.
If you do not have the statusbar add on, get it here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26
I'll help you tweak it and set clamwin from there.

This is scary. Norton is off. Clamwin is on. The Statusbar has been downloaded.
We need to figure out a way to exchange email addresses. Then I can compensate you for your time.

Pam, don't worry about my time.....it's cool :)
And don't be scared.
Let's configure Clamwin.
-open clamwin
-click tools
-select the "general" tab
-make sure a check mark is in the first 3 selections, make sure the next selected is "move to Quarantine folder", make sure the last option is selected also (unload from memory)
-now select the "file locations" tab
-if nothing is in the three selections, you will have to click the button to the right of each to point it at the appropriate item (clamscan, freshclam, virus database folder)
-click the button next to clamscan
-browse to c:Program Files/clamwin/bin (clamscan is located in the bin folder, so is freshclam.exe)
-the virus database folder section should be filled in.... if not, you will find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\.clamwin\db
now....
o.k., i boo booed (full disclosure) :), I though that the download status bar did the autoscan... it doesn't. That is handled with freshclam.exe, which you just configured above.
Sorry to waste you time, my bad :(
The download statusbar is a neat manager if you choose to keep it. If not, just go to your addons section, select it, and click disable.
any question's, just ask :)

Ok, that is all good. Now what about Spam? Do you have an anti-Spam program you recommend?
