Introduction
Why So Many People Love The Game
I like this list. Unfortunately the myth about why a course has 18 holes is exactly that, a myth.
St Andrews originally had 11 holes in a straight line. A "round" was out and back, or 22 holes. In 1764, four of the holes were deemed to be too short, and were combined, leaving 9 holes each way. So, a round was became 18 holes. Later, a second hole was added to each green, forming a "links" course, and explains why there are different colored flags for each set of 9 holes. In the 1890s, the Royal and Ancient was established as the official rule making body for golf, and 18 holes became the norm. This did not become official in the U.S. until 1933.
By the way, in the UK, a shot is 50 mL, and a bottle is 750 mL, so there are 15 shots in a bottle; in the US, a shot 1.5 oz, so there are 17 shots in a bottle.
