Introduction
I was born and raised in Arizona. We do not do "daylight savings". We are smart. They actually tried it once when I was younger and, needless to say, it didn't stick.
History
Ben Franklin thought of it years ago. Not one of his better ideas.
They instituted it in WWs one and two. Then un-instituted it after the wars.
In 1883 the U.S. railroad industry established official time zones with a set standard time within each zone. Congress eventually came on board, signing the railroad time zone system into law in 1918. Okay, it makes sense that we are all on a standard time and that was a good thing.
In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which standardized the start and end dates for daylight saving time but allowed individual states to remain on standard time if their legislatures allowed it. Less of a good thing.

Spring forward / fall back
Forward or backward it still sucks. I grant you it is a bit nice to gain the hour instead of losing the hour, but either way I spend the next two weeks trying to determine what time it "really" is.

What the hell time is it in Arizona
My sister, and many friends live in one of the states smart enough not to torture their citizenry with this stupid crap. In the summer the difference is two hours, the same as California; in the winter it is only one hour.
I am menopausal - I cannot keep up with this idiocy.

Advantages
Daylight saving time decreases the amount of daylight in the morning hours so that more daylight is available during the evening.
Not everyone benefits from the change. Farmers and others who rise before dawn may have to operate in the dark a while longer before daybreak.
Daylight saving time, however, can bring many benefits. Research has shown that more available daylight increases energy savings while decreasing the number of traffic accidents, traffic fatalities, and incidences of crime.
Congress noted other advantages while updating legislation in 1986, including "more daylight outdoor playtime for the children and youth of our Nation, greater utilization of parks and recreation areas, expanded economic opportunity through extension of daylight hours to peak shopping hours and through extension of domestic office hours to periods of greater overlap with the European Economic Community."

Disadvantages
All of the above is crap and everybody is cranky!
Okay, well maybe it all isn't crap but I don't think I buy into the energy savings. And how many kids do you know play outside longer because of daylight savings. The Nintendos are inside where the lights are.

Old schedule
The changes occur the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October.

New schedule
Starting in 2007, most of the United States and Canada observe DST from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November

If I were Empress
I like the summer schedule the best. So, I would make all of the world adjust to the Springfield, Missouri summer time schedule. I would make all clocks be radio controlled and locked in, so they could not be adjusted, just in case there was a revolt and the Daylight Savings Rebels stormed the gates. It would do no good because the clocks could not be changed.
No one would ever again have to say, "Don't forget to set your clocks back/ahead before you go to bed tonight."
Double Crap - I am not Empress and November 4th is just around the corner!!

I DO NOT like getting home at 5 pm and its dark!
Good list, Pam.
