Why I hate to travel...

Introduction

Most people LOVE to travel. They love the excitement of new places and leaving home. NOT me. I used to like it when I was younger, but now the benefits of the travel have to SERIOUSLY outweigh all the hassles and pain involved in staying overnight away from home.

1

I have small children.

This in itself is reason enough never to leave my house again. Anytime I go anywhere I have to take half the house with me or suffer the grim consequences. It's always a crap shoot whether or not I'll remember everything I might possibly need to pacify my 7-month old son if he poops, gets hungry, tired or cold while we are out and about. Having to remember everything I need to take on an extended trip away from home with small kids is impossible.
2

I have small children whose behavior is unpredictable.

never mind all the stuff I might need for my kids when I travel. Even if I have everything I might possibly need my kids still know exactly how to make me miserable by screaming on the plane, trying to get away from me at the airport, or trying to get away from me on the plane so they can wander up and down the aisle.

When you travel, you have to carry it all with you.

Whenever you travel you have to be able to carry all your stuff with you. I always over pack so I have everything I need, but then I have to carry it with me through the airport.

It's uncomfortable.

Either you are cramped in a car for hours on end or you are cramped in the coach section of a plane for hours on end. Then when you finally reach your destination you have to wait for all the people in front of you to get all their stuff and get off the plane. I hate that part the most.

The food is weird.

I went to France and saw pizza that had over easy eggs on top of it. What a way to ruin a good pizza. Since I don't speak French I couldn't order my food they way I like it. So I didn't eat anything I couldn't see before I ordered it. It seriously limited my dining choices.

I get carsick/airsick/seasick.

No explanation needed.
7

I have to pee a lot.

Very inconvenient on car trips or in airplanes. Tiny airplane restrooms and lines to use them also suck.
8

I don't get to sleep in my own bed.

I have an awesome tempurpedic mattress on my bed and I LOVE it. I never have as comfortable a bed when I travel. And I love to sleep.

The kids will get older and traveling will become less of a hassle. This is the perfect site for you - make lists of what you need to take, what helps to calm the kids, where all of the clean bathrooms are on your way to where ever, etc. When I flew with my 6 month old (a million years ago) our old fashioned pediatrician recommended children's Dramamine; the kid slept and wasn't air sick. Cool beans.

Speaking for the traveling public, thank you. I fly a lot, and the dumb ass yuppie families (not that you are, you just touched a nerve) that don't know that you shouldn't travel with children too young to understand what is expected of them in public, or that everyone loves little Tyler, Taylor, or Jerimiah, make me want to scream. You can't have any fun traveling with children under 5, anyway, so please stay home. And, by the way, (again, a general comment) when the kid is screaming during take off or landing, it it because the air pressure is changing; stop explaining how they "never do this at home" and give the kid a starlight mint, or a bottle; anything to make their ears pop.

Good news? After they grow up and leave the house you can walk around naked, and travel becomes fun again. DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT drug your children.
