Transport supplies? Idealism? You guys are crazy. Is it really so wrong or idealistic to think that individuals can rely on themselves and the natural world around them to survive?

Well, personally, I'm all for anarchy. Because I'm healthy, handy and wise. But civilization requires a degree of cooperation. I read a quote from George Stephanopolis once that summed it up; to paraphrase, he said that he understood that there was a constant battle inside each person between altruism and self interest. And that he believed in original sin and understood that left on his own, the self interest and xenephobia generally won out. So he decided that we need government to force us to do the right thing, even if we didn't feel like it. Think of voting rights, civil rights, and gender rights. Government isn't particularly good, but it is certainly necessary.

Of course, I believe you can survive on your own using the natural world's resources, providing you have the experience or knowledge and are in the wilderness.

But where there are masses of people making messes...I cannot imagine the chaos that would exist without a structured chute for the herd of humanity. If not our government, an individual or group would take the lead - good or bad - and I hope I would have a say in it.
