What, exactly, do we want the government to do for us? UPDATE

Introduction

The Republican Presidents poll ratings are at an all time low. The Democratic congress poll ratings are also at an all time low. The country is experiencing a “tug of war”; the George Soros Move On.Org crowd pulling against the Religious right. I personally, think that most Americans are probably the mud puddle; stuck in the middle waiting to be landed on.

The Iraq War

In or out; announce a withdrawal date or not announce one. Keep the terrorists there and not here? Or let them have Iraq and then come gunning for us? I hate that our brave service people are dying and that their families are suffering. I wish some one knew what to do and it is pretty obvious to me that there are no good choices. What should the government do?

Health Care

We want the government or business to cover it all. But we also want to choose our own doctors and have procedures in a timely manner. I work in the health care industry. There is a code for injections, just the injection not the medicine. Some providers bill at $6.00, some at $52.00. Either way there is an allowed amount, and, if you have the right PPO you only have to pay $4.44 and if you have met your deductible that can be discounted to $0. How the hell did this happen? Why can’t they charge a reasonable amount for a service? The government got involved, business got involved, lawyers got involved… What should the government do, if anything?

Immigration

We have been overrun with immigrants from many nations; the majority appearing to be from Hispanic areas. There is a feeling that these immigrants have chosen not to “melt” into our melting pot. Our social service organizations are stretched to the max, our schools are suffering, and hospitals in some areas have no way to give decent service to anybody. Some of us want more tolerance and humane treatment for these families just trying to achieve the American dream; others say if they are not legal they should not be here, much less have access to jobs, services, cars, etc. The most recent attempt by the government to address this issue did not make anyone happy. What is it going to take? There are no good answers on this one; but this one is up to the government to manage. What should they do?

The Environment

Liberals, “We are killing the Earth”. Conservatives, “The Greenies are crazy”. Certainly we should be required to take better care of our natural resources. But the earth is so huge and has been through atmospheric changes several times during it’s existence. Only God knows if this is cyclical or not, but how much should the US Gov. be expected to do? China and India huge air pollution problems, America can’t do it all. But how much should the US Government do?

Social Security

We have to let the government handle it. No, no, let the people have a little bit to invest. No, no, I don’t want the responsibility, you do it Uncle Sam. Whatever! The truth is that there is a lot less of that pie to go around and some of us will go hungry – literally. The government needs to do something, they are totally in control of this; but what?

What say you??

I would really like to hear what real people out in our country think. Some of you are older, some younger; some more liberal or conservative than others. I sure as hell don’t know what to think any more.

Disclosure: My husband is a federal employee. Both yours and our tax dollars have supported our family for 30 years. He is a hard working, dedicated civil service employee – who has no answers either.

Slumber Party - July 17th

The government decided to have a slumber party with cots and everything. I wonder who popped the popcorn? Did they wear their jammies? These problems will all be solved now...

How about if they (politicians) think not what the country can do for them...what they can do for the country? What do you think the odds are?

pam....these are all great questions. and i completely agree that most of us are stuck in the middle somewhere. i hope that there is a period of time in the near future when money stops talking and common sense steps in. in my lifetime, you think?

The main problem with solving any of these problems is that the answer will piss off one side or the other. They will whine and shout and we get nothing done. Money will never solve any of these ever. Once you start throwing money at aproblem, people/companies start sucking it up...
