5 things you can't blame on George W. Bush.

Introduction

Anyone who's read any of my lists knows that I believe Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld are war criminals who should be impeached and thrown in prison. But, amazingly, there are a few problems you can't blame on them.

1

High gasoline prices.

Oil companies are publicly traded corporations; the board of directors has a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders to maximize profits. Further, the expanding economies in China and India have created a huge increase in demand.

A long term change in our energy policy, with a move to renewable fuel sources would help a lot long term, but short term, get used to it, they aren't ever going back down.

Jobs lost to India, China, and Costa Rica.

Again, the corporations have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits, but the major party responsible for the job losses is YOU. That's right, it's your fault. When Levi, Nike, and all the others started manufacturing clothing in China, India, and Malasia, the garment workers in the South and New England begged you to buy American, but you ignored them. When they started importing beef, fruit and vegetables, from Australia and South America, American farmers begged us to buy American; we ignored them.

Those jobs will come back when the American workers are willing to work for the same money as the rest of the world. It's called a global economy, and it will go away when gas prices go back down.

Schools/education.

Yes, Bush's cuts in spending for schools and higher education are draconian, but after all, he is dumb as a box of rocks, and he is president, so how important could educatiohn be to him. Besides, he and big business want American workers just educated enough to be factory workers, not factory owners.

We are our own worst enemy on this one too. Unless you believe teachers know how to solve the "problems," and just aren't doing it because they like to hear on the news every night what a crappy job they are doing. The schools are fine, parents suck. Every year, I check the local papers for a list of academic scholarship winners for the current school year, and every year there are two, three or four kids from the lowest rated high school in the district getting scholarships to Duke, or Stanford. What do they have that the other students don't? Parents who care, and who have made education a drop dead, deal breaker, number one priority for their kids.

As a very smart Possum once said, "We have met the enemy... and he is us"

Rampant growth of the "Big Box Stores"

Almost every day I hear some new age Woody Guthrie lamenting the loss of the family farm, or mom and pop grocery stores, or hardware stores.

Where do you buy paint? Where do you buy groceries? Where do you buy hardware. In most small towns, a new Super Walmart opening is treated as a holiday. Two years later they are all whining about the baorded up businesses on the town square.

The weather.

Yeah, it's hot, and a lot of people want to blame global warming. Well, Bush is a lunatic, for denying global warming, but this heat wave isn't about global warming, it's just hot.

Now the frequency of these heat waves, and blizzards in the winter may be affected by global warming. But it's August, and it is always hot in the MIdwest in August.

Bang on again Hippie.

Consumerism will only get worse in the coming years. Today's youth in North America have a sense of entitlement. They expect the world for no effort on their part.
This will drive overseas production of shitty imports to the big box stores because the youth cannot get a good paying job, therefore they must purchase the cheaper imported stuff.
They could get a good paying job IF they had an adequate education, which was never properly offered.

Bush will not admit to Global Warming.... not because he is daft (which he is), but because he has to please all of the Big Oil companies that are in his back pocket.
All studies on Global Warming eventually come back to C02 emissions, a great majority of which come from the burning of fossil fuels.
To speak in favor of Global Warming would be equal to biting the hand that feeds it for the Prez. :)
