While homosexuality has become a lot more accepted in some parts of US culture, lots of people, especially evangelical Christians, still think of it as a sexual perversion. Some gays end up enmeshed in these subcultures and decide to stay in the closet, with results ranging from tragic to amusing, and everything in between.
