Introduction

this is my version of the list created by emily:

http://www.onmylist.com/category/rants_tangents/Things_That_Confuse_Me
_1

by the way, i find it mildly disturbing that this is the list i add the most updates too.

definitions using the word being defined

for instance, if you look up "sovereign", it says "a person who has sovereign power or authority". great. so what's that MEAN?

sell by dates

does this mean SELL by or EAT by. i'd like to know. i throw everything out on the sell by date. is that a waste?

why the DMV will schedule an 8:30AM appointment when they open at 9AM

this happens on wednesdays only. i this found out the hard way. and why wednesdays? they open at 8AM on monday, tuesday, thursday and friday.

selective male hearing

i'm three feet away and speaking in a normal tone. how can you not HEAR me?

dust bunnies

i'm clean, house gets cleaned regularly. where do these balls of fuzz come from?

wardrobe choices

my main confusion is when people walk out the door with clothes on that are far too tight and their belly/boobs/muffin top are hanging out. did you not look? do you think this look is slimming?

ann coulter

she's on this site a lot...and i don't want to get political...but i don't understand how she can be so MEAN, and conservative christians seem to support her more than any other group. what would jesus do? he would NOT say the things she does.

papyrus

i don't understand why people - especially in the design industry - choose the font for their business collateral. it is so overused and gives me hives.

health insurance & taxes

why do they make this SO impossible? it really shouldn't have to be.

traffic

there's some law of physics that explains the phenomenon of traffic (when it's not something obvious like a wreck). when you're on the freeway backed up for miles, and then all of a sudden - BAM - everyone starts moving. i need to figure this out.

usps, fedex, ups, dhl, etc.

how in the world do they track a bazillion pieces of mail and get each specific piece to its destination in matter of days? this blows my mind.

holland / netherlands

what is the difference? and why are the people called dutch?

irish clothing fad

i don't understand why every pro-sports team had a version of their jersey or hat in green with a clover leaf. bumper stickers too. i think it would be cool to be irish, but i'm not. i would venture to say 80% of people sporting this look are irish posers. and why ireland? why not spain? japan?

effect / affect

in to / into

i like the idea of people solving these problems for me, a la RT's comment below. here's another that stalls me.

successories

www.successories.com/

are these for real? are people really motivated by this crapola?

Good ones!!
Is it okay if I add?:

Why does the shower curtain billow in at some point of some showers; but not all of the time?

Why does wine give me hot flashes and beer doesn't?

Black pants/Brown shoes??? or vice versa??

Why are friends too embarrassed to tell you when you have pepper or spinach on your teeth?

How does Kelly find the time to make a pertinent and succinct comment on all of these lists?

Papyrus -- and what about people who use it as their email message font? Have they ever heard of clear legibility? Health Insurance - I find mine has become easier since joining Big Brother Kaiser and that taxes are easier if you don't make too much money and have no investments or write-offs. Traffic, I'm pretty sure the explanation for 101 is that it's haunted by ghosts.

i rarely patronize any business that uses papyrus. am i being too harsh?

When I was a child, the paper was papyrus, not the lettering...

Why can we send people to the moon, a camera to Mars, yet not figure out how to live together?

I hate Ann Coulter. I hate Ann Coulter even more in her Robert Plant black dress.
I also hate tickets and sneaky cops in airplanes. I think people should get tickets for driving too slowly! :( boo to you and I for just trying to hurry to get to the good stuff!

Kathy, I could live with you, in the basement bedroom and I would clean the dust bunnies, and send you email in a legible font

I don't get the weather: high pressure; low pressure; fronts; thunderstorms vs. thundershowers; sleet, hail, frozen rain...Huh?

Solving some of the mysteries...
Sell by dates are just that, sell by dates. You can still eat the product after that date. Use by dates and experation dates are a different story. Sell by dates are for the manufacturer or grocer (I used to do restaurant/retail inspections).
Traffic...its all about the bottle neck when it isn't a wreck or construction. Everyone slows down to let people in or the line cutters cause all the problems, cause one lane goes fast then some jackass tries to switch lanes so he holds the whole lane up. I blame everything on slow people!
Affect = verb
Effect = noun

colleen, i just referred to your comment for help. i had to use "effect" in a sentence. i hope i used it correctly.
