Signs That I'm No Longer a Teen and Am Finally Growing Up! :(

Introduction

I'm an 80's child. I remember all the cool toys of the 80s and such. Now that I'm a cool sophisticated 25, I can seriously tell that I'm definitely growing up and becoming more mature. So, here are some things I noticed about myself (or more likely reactions that I had about things) that prove that I'm no longer a member of the us (naive teens) and now a member of the thems (jaded adults).

1

I Hate MTV/BET/VH1 and Any Other Viacom Creation

Look, I remember when MTV was the main "go to" for coolness. For those of us who had cable, we could sneer at others for only being able to see The Box, or God forbid, only listen to the radio to get their music fix. But somewhere after Real World New Orleans, MTV veered into the land of cheese. Programming overtook quality music, and you only saw the same 10 artists' videos over and over again. Sigh...it was the corruption of my childhood memory.

Because I'm So Tired of Myspace and Refuse to Join Facebook

Look I work in marketing and for the last few months, my industry newsletters have been filled with tired ass articles about the possible demise of Facebook and the un-marketability of Myspace in terms of advertising dollars. Now, I'm certainly not stupid enough to say that these social platforms will die a quick death...it's like the internet it's not going anywhere. But for some strange reason, since I work on a computer all day long, I need to have more reasons to spend hours on a website than simply looking at people's stupid ass pages and sending random ass notes to friends when I could just *gasp* get on the phone or go to their house and talk to them. My theory is, I have enough real friends that I don't need to add fake friends who I have no desire to see or meet. And...my boyfriend is a DJ, so no, I don't want to listen to your music. :(

Because Cruising the Mall or Local Hotspot for Dudes is so 90s For Me

I graduated high school in 2000 and college in '04. Once I left my hometown of Indianapolis, the thought of cruising the mall or any other major social space for dudes seemed like a lame waste of time. I want to know that a guy can do more than walk aimlessly down the mall atrium with his boys. Let me know that you know how to read, or you can actually speak without being cheesy.

Because I'm Watching Oxygen?!

How sad is that? Lol, but I do like watching Oxygen to see Janice Dickenson flip out on her talent or the crackheads on Bad Girls continue to show the world why they're sub level citizens. Yeah, it's mean, but come on, 7 chicks in a house and all they know how to do is fight like hoodrats? And yet they all say that they're "ladies". Please if you're a lady then Paris Hilton isn't annoying to see on my tv screen.

Speaking of Reality TV...It Sucks Mostly

I miss old school reality tv. Now days it seems like any dip can get a show. And thanks to the writers strike, any dip has gotten their own show. Sign the damn deal so I can see some decent programming.

Because the First Thing I Do When I Get Near My Mac Is Check My Financial Portfolio

Hey, I don't want to work forever! And me worrying about Myspace or Facebook isn't going to make me rich unless I buy stock in it. Consequently, DON'T buy stock in Facebook for another 2 months (there's going to be some drama there). And DO buy Apple stock now while it's very low!

Because I Constantly Think About Domestic Bliss

NO...my biological clock is not ticking. But I do want a dog, and all I can think about is decorating my apartment. Often I spend my lunch breaks at DIY spots like Bed Bath & Beyond or Home Depot. Hey...you spend atleast a third of your money on your residence (more if you're in NYC) you might as well like the four walls you live in.

Because I DONT Need To Be On The Phone 24/7, 365

I have a tricked out smartphone (no, not the iPhone...I'm not into it) and I rarely use it for all the capabilities it can do. Check my phone bill and I'm always using the least of the allowable minutes in my crew's share plan. I rarely go online wih it (because I'm in front of a computer with internet access almost every waking hour of the day). I use my phone to check email on the sly at work, text on the sly at work and call my boyfriend on lunch break and when I'm heading home. :)

Because I've Officially Decided to be Politically Independent

I grew up Republican (shocking in an Afr. Amer. home) because my family never benefited from the advantages given to the typical Afr. Amer. Democratic demographic. We weren't working class, my parents had great jobs, I went to an Ivy college etc. But, as I've gotten older, I feel all politicians are full of it. So, no one deserves my allegiance...it must be earned. May the best individual win... but there'll be no voting on party lines here!

Because The Only Absolute For Me Is The Bible

Growing up, everything seemed so clear. It was either right or wrong. And although I envy how the Bible made everything so crystal clear. Yet, in real life, there's tons of shades of gray out there. Wading through that sea of gray now is somewhat frustrating and definitely helps to define you.

Because I Long SInce Stopped Worrying About What Others Thought

This used to rule my life growing up, making sure that others liked me. Now, I could seriously care less. Maybe it's the difference between growing up in Indianapolis/the Midwest (where you're encouraged to be JUST like everyone else and not stand out) and now living in NYC (where you're EXPECTED not to follow the leader). Whatever the reason, I knew I never fit in with others growing up because I was always looking up when everyone else was looking forward (like they were told to do). And at this point in life, people who don't like me for me can go jump in a lake, to put it nicely.

Because I Actually Love Budgeting

You should see me on pay day! I can't wait to pay out to whatever I owe and then budget the rest of my money accordingly. I'm practically OCD about it. But I love to watch the stacks grow (but not in the King Midas never-give-to-others sort of way).

Because I Like Thinking Movies

Nothing is more annoying than watching something where the plot is so obvious that you might as well not watch more than the first 10 - 15 minutes. Come on, if I pay for the cable or the movie tickets, please let me feel engaged!

Because I Love Things In Moderation

I think for most people, teen years are seen as years of excess. Too much make up, too short skirt, too much alcohol. Don't get me wrong, I have those days when I decide "tonight I'm getting fucked up", but for the most part, I like to be able to remember the chain of events each night.

Because I'm Not Desperate For A Party Anymore

I grew up in a strict household. So, as soon as I went to college, Thurs - Sat (and sometimes Wednesday depending on the event) was a party night. We all went out in our cutest club tops, went to the frat progressives to get as trashed as possible and then stayed trashed until the parties ended at 2am. Well, now I rarely go out lol. Which is crazy considering my boyfriend works in the club industry. But when I do, I expect never to stand in line (which I don't) the bartenders to know me (so I don't pay for drinks) and to not be jostled by the club commoners. :) Snotty I know...

I'm emailing this to my 21 year old and a few of her friends so they can see what will, hopefully, change as they move forward towards adulthood. Thanks!!
