Introduction
places i've canoed or kayaked since moving to the midwest in '94.
1
the buffalo river, arkansas
probably the best lazy canoe-float in a five state area. the first designated "national river" in the US. it floats through the valley with bluffs, as tall as three hundred feet, over the river. ignore the "deliverance" feeling you first get, going there. it's pretty amazing, really.
2
the north fork river, missouri
3
the jack's fork river, missouri
4
the current river, missouri
5
the niangua river, missouri
good to take beginners. it's super easy and barely moves. more of a paddle than a float.
6
the spring river, arkansas
fun, because of the small waterfalls you have to traverse around or just balls over.
7
the james river, missouri
at least one bluegrass tune is dedicated to the "dirty ol' james". it's pokey, filled with farm run-off and is dammed on the upper part by city utilities to create springfield lake.
8
the finley river, missouri
also mentioned in said bluegrass tune. just as dirty the james, but more of a creek, really. it's kind of ghetto, but fun on a lazy sunday afternoon.
9
the gasconade river, missouri
slow, sucks, don't bother. rednecks, in jet-powered jonboats, cruise up and down it. they are REALLY annoying. especially if you've a female onboard.
10
the south creek greenspace, springfield, mo
not exactly legal, i don't think. only "floatable" after a heavy heavy rain. my friend ryan and i did a half-mile stretch through town, pretty much, on a dare.
ah, missouri rivers. nothing like 'em.
