Introduction

we had a 4.2 earthquake last night that woke me up and then proceeded to shimmy and shake for a while. this is the fourth one i've felt since we moved to san francisco just over a year ago. my thoughts.

night time earthquakes are not ideal

i get so confused when i wake from a deep sleep anyway. when it's an earthquake that wakes me AND it's dark and creepy outside. not cool. but at least i didn't lose my balance. i was lying down.

dog reaction, or lack thereof

dogs are suppose to be able to sense and earthquake moments before it happens. ours snoozed right through. useless.

tornados are better

i have such a love/hate relationship with tornados. they horrify me, but i think they are so intriguing and beautiful to watch (on tv). you also get warning with tornados, which is very considerate. earthquakes, not so considerate.

the "big one"

all this chatter around work today that we're due for a "big one". i'm not looking forward to this.

pressure release or ominous sign

there are two schools of thought. one says these minor tremblors release pressure and will hold off the "big one". one says it's just the appetizer before dinner.

worst place in the world to build a city

this was according to stone phillips on dateline. he started his report on the 100th anniversary of the 1906 san francisco earthquake by saying, "If there is one place in the entire world where you should not build a city, San Francisco would be that place". this was broadcast one week after we moved here. thanks for the welcome.

epicenters make a difference

this was the fourth earthquake i've felt, and by far the worst. it wasn't the highest magnitude though. the epicenter was just closer to the city.

so what do you do?

it's not like you have a lot of time to react. i'm not exactly sure what you're suppose to do in the event of an earthquake. get under the table? go outside? stay inside? stand next to a large object? i need to learn this before the "big one".

Come back to our area; you will only have to worry about New Madrid. It's much less active (I think).
