More than 2,000 miners have returned to the surface today after having been trapped for more than a day in a South African gold mine, officials said. "I'm happy now because we are out and we are alive," one miner said. Some 1,200 miners are still awaiting rescue.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun signed a joint statement Thursday, pledging to begin work on a permanent peace agreement that would replace the cease-fire accord signed at the end of the Korean War.

Relatives of six men killed in a Utah mine collapse told lawmakers Wednesday that their loved ones voiced safety concerns before the tragedy. Sheila Phillips, the mother of a miner attended the hearing with her grandson. "It's just hard to have hope and have your heart broke everyday and to watch your grandson grow up without a dad," she said.
