Introduction

this list isn't complete by a long shot...for the record this doesn't necessarily have to all black women. there was some white chick on pink floyd pulse that could wail for one example. anyway this is a running list of songs where you get some really kick ass gospel type vocal lifting some long haired white rocker to higher places. ok it doesn't necessarily have to be a long haired white rocker. could be a short haired poppy guy like dave matthews too but you get the picture.

Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)

www.therollingstones.com

There's a high point towards the end of this song where the chicks voice kind breaks in vicious soaring note. gets me off every time.

Let it Loose (Rolling Stones)

The Stones exile era stuff is great at this manuever. The whole album is actually chock full of sweet black backup. Lots of great gospel echoing of Mick's snarling and wailing. At about the 4:27 mark a couple of female vocalists break free for some soulful call and response type goodness.

Thorn in My Pride (Black Crowes)

Could pretty much throw the whole Southern Harmony and Music Companion album in here too. And maybe i will. Come to think of it, the album makes a nice sister to Exile. Chris Robinson is the best.

All Time Low (Widespread Panic)

Dottie Peoples just simply throws it down at the end of this one. "my name aint what you call me! I'm leavin, i aint comin back" As a side note I notice a theme here of having a lead singer who can wail like a junk yard dog. Let it all hang out JB!

Stay (Dave Matthews Band)

Always liked this song. Makes me think of summertime. Love the sax at the end in addition to the sweet black.

Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2, Rattle and Hum version)

"I believe in the kingdom come, when all the colors bleed in to one" I believe your stance on which version you like better says something about you. I'm not sure exactly what, but I'll take the gospel version any day.

Julius (Phish)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phish

This one has boozy Big Easy feel to it. Great horns. Gospel-y freestyle. A little organ. Gets all stirred up in funky pot. Where the Black Crowes and Rolling Stones are one style, this is something different. If I could go to a church that sounded like this, I'd be there every week gettin' my boogie on..

(I love rock with boozy horns too btw) ((i also very much like the word boozy))

i LOVE "gimme shelter", and most other songs with female back up. Check out "set the fire to the third bar" by snow patrol. the female voice is actually rufus wainwright's sister. i didn't even know he had a sister :)
