Introduction
These movies all have great soundtracks. Listed in no particular order.
1
High Fidelity
Great collection. I had already heard Jack Black's singing through Tenacious D, but I was still surprised by his cover of Marvin Gaye. Also, Stereolab? Love them.
2
Once
Glen Hansard makes 2 appearances on this list. Before I even realized I had seen him before in "The Commitments", I had fallen in love with the music in this movie. At various times haunting, rueful, and giddy-it's still in heavy rotation.

The Commitments
Flat out kickass. Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, James Brown...stellar material. For one thing, this movie is very entertaining, for another, the cast is composed of people with true talent. The only shame is that some of the cast members have been making a living with a shabby knockoff Commitments-cover band, touring the country and wearing ugly vests. They should have just let it go.
4
The Royal Tenenbaums
Wes Anderson and Mark Mothersbaugh make a good team. Plus, any movie with The Clash and Vince Guaraldi is aces in my book.
5
Moulin Rouge
I just think the songs for this movie are fun, wild and smartly written. I think you definately have to have loved the movie in order to be on this boat and people either loved it or hated it with a thousand passions. I admit it isn't for everyone.
6
Rushmore
Great use of British Invasion to help tell the story of young man's internal (and external) struggles. Mark Mothersbaugh's score and Yves Montand are among my favorite tracks.
7
Six String Samurai
Weird movie. Great soundtrack highlighted by The Red Elvises.

Me Without You
I thought this soundtrack echoed that feeling of prescribing specific songs songs to certain events or moments in your life-like what song was playing when you fought with so-and-so about this guy. Stuff like that can be seared in your memory bank.
Well thought out and great for supplementing mixed tapes for college buddies. Yes, I still make mixed tapes, shut up.

Requiem for a Dream
ugh. This movie is among the few that I cannot watch twice because, unlike horror movies, this scared the ever loving shit out of me. But the music-especially the bits by The Kronos Quartet are breathtaking.
Don't do drugs, kids.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Hilarious, clever and dark, just like Danny Elfman.

True Romance
Not a big Quentin Tarantino fan, talk about a big head (literally AND figuratively). But he loves music and this combination of songs with a score by Hans Zimmer is well done. Most people would point out Pulp Fiction, but I like this better. So thar.
Shrek soundtrack is good too.
