Introduction

Below are a list of musical instruments. Some are real. Some are fake. You decide.

1

Sousaphone

Developed by John Phillip Sousa, the Sousaphone was designed in the 1890’s. Although not initially designed for marching bands, the Sousaphone, which resembles a tuba, is often used in marching bands.
2

Heliophone

Designed in the 1930’s, the Heliophone uses multiple valves and a reed to produce a high pitched whirling sound. The Heliophone is used most often in experimental German music from the time period. Its inventor, Viktor Spielhoeffer, was a renowned physicist.
3

Cornet

Although it looks like a trumpet, it is not. The cornet is often used in brass bands, jazz ensembles, and the like. It produces a mellower sound than the trumpet.
4

Clumpus

A percussion instrument from western Africa, the Clumpus, like the timpani, can play notes. It’s been in African tribal music for centuries, and is most recognizable for its clattering effects.
5

Theremin

Popularized by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, the Theremin was designed by Leon Theremin. One of the first electronic instruments, the Theremin produces a high pitched, tremolo like sound. It’s often used in horror and sci-fi movies.
6

Spanish Vibrodica

Like the English Vibrodica, the Spanish version contains 2 rows of iron plates that are hit with a wooden mallet. Whereas the English version is reverberates against an iron chamber, producing a metallic sound, the Spanish version reverbates in a wooden chamber, making it more mellow.
7

Rumption

An electronic drum designed in the 80s, the rumption can be heard in most hip-hop albums. Sounding a little bit like a splat, the rumption was probably designed when musicians were first playing with electronic drums. It remains the most widely used drum in electronic music.

Okay.
I don't know which of these you made up, but have you seen STOMP?
I think anything can be considered a musical instrument if used with that intent!

True: Sousaphone (I love J.P. Sousa marches and the movie), Cornet & Theremin
False: Heliophone, Clumpus (fun dog name though), Sp Vibrodica and Rumption.

Please grade on a curve.

(I looked at Pam's test paper and have copied her answers)
Now, I suggest these as correct definitions following my hypothesis above...
heliophone - a musical greeting given by grandmothers when they answer the phone and believe a grandchild is coming to see them.
clumpus - a percussion instrument made of rubber and wrapped loosely around the feet. Genus name - over-size, species - goulashes.
vibrodica....I am going to skip that one.
rumption - a rhythm instrument consisting of 32 ivories chowing down on a head of cabbage.

Can we have extra credit?
