Lake of Tears

www.last.fm/music/Lake+of+Tears/+wiki

Lake of Tears is a Swedish metal band formed in 1994. It is mostly known for the wide range of different styles employed over the course of its releases - ranging from doom metal and gothic metal to psychedelic pop or folk- and the continuously high marks for songwriting and guitar work it received from music critics. The band broke up shortly after their fourth release (Forever Autumn in 1999), but to honor their contract with Black Mark they released another album entitled The Neonai (2002), which was finished off by the band leader Daniel Brennare alone.
But the band members still continued to hold contact, and after a joint rehearsal session in the summer of 2003 - meant to kill boredom - they got back together.
The chemistry between the musicians was as good as ever, and once the rust had been shaken off, they set about working on ideas for new tracks.
Lake of Tears released their 7th studio album Moons and Mushrooms on April 26th, 2007. The album features an increasingly heavy approach to guitar-work, which is emblematic of the new release. Though still having mainly a gothic metal sound, there are some progressive metal influences through the album as well, regarding the guitar riffs. Unlike Black Brick Road (whose melodies were primarily conceived via keyboard experimentation), Moons and Mushrooms features songs originating from the band's recent sporadic touring. Thus the riffs were the first musical element conceived, resulting in a heavier, darker sound.

Penumbra

1) Penumbra (gothic metal band)
Their lyrics are themed toward love, angels, witches, death, emotions. They formed in 1996.
1996 - Creation of the band
Even though the band has been founded rather by chance: while visiting a concert one day in 1996 Dorian (guitar) met Jarlaath (voc.) and soon after they had rather introduced each other they found themselves philosophizing about metal in general and in particular. They realized that they had very much in common regarding their musical ideas.

Both of them took the view that there are too many bands around sounding all more or less the same but not enough of them using classical music influences.

So it happened that they arranged a rehearsal together with a soprano and a synthetizer. Jarlaath also played the oboe. This rehearsal went so outrageously fine that they decided without the slightest hesitation to leave their bands and to found Penumbra (at this point they called themselves Imperatoria

Darkwell

www.last.fm/music/Darkwell/+wiki

Darkwell is the name of a gothic metal band from Innsbruck, Austria. Formed in 1999 by bassist Roland Wurzer and guitarist Roman Wiencke.
Solitude drowns our souls – hearts are freezing, longing für warmth – despair covers everything – suddenly: a small red glooming flame breaks through the darkness, awakes us with a kiss and relieves our pain – guides us into the sweet embracement of the night. Darkwell is the celebration of the dark sensualism”

Darkwell was born early 1999, with the aim and motivation to create alive and profound Gothic Metal. All the bandmembers are expirienced musicians. They know well how to inspire liveliness in their music, resulting in strong compositions and mature arrangements.

www.last.fm/music/Nightwish/+wiki

Nightwish is a Finnish band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. The band's leader, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen composes songs that are often classified as either symphonic metal or power metal; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called opera metal. Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the symphonic metal genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Therion, Stratovarius, Epica, Sonata Arctica and Visions of Atlantis.

The band currently consists of Anette Olzon (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboards), Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen (Drums), Marco Tapani Hietala (Bass and vocals) and Emppu Vuorinen (Guitars)

Although the band achieved prominence in their home country since the release of their first single, they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Century Child (2002) and Once (2004), both which had video clips shown on the MTV channel of countries from the American continent, for example.

The band was one of the first ones who made use of contrasting vocals - male bass vocals and death growls and female soprano singing, today sometimes referred to as the "Beauty and the Beast" vocals.
On their first three albums (Theatre of Tragedy, Velvet Darkness They Fear, Aégis) Theatre of Tragedy presented lyrics written predominantly in a form of Olde English, an early form of the language prior to Shakespearean times.

Doom Core!

hallowed name in Doom Metal circles. Stockholm's CANDLEMASS arose from the earlier NEMESIS outfit belonging to bassist LEIF EDLING and guitarist Christian Weberyd. Prior to the dissolvement of the group, NEMESIS had released the highly praised 'Day Of Retribution' album in 1984. Debuting CANDLEMASS on the tape trading circuit with the four song 'Witchcraft' demo in 1984, featuring a line-up of Edling, Weberyd and drummer Mats Ekström, and a second demo that November, the band promptly signed to the French Black Dragon label. Having added former A.T.C. guitarist Mats Björkman (a.k.a. 'Mappe') the band began recording what would become the 'Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus' debut at Thunderload Studios with Ragne Wahlquist, frontman for HEAVY LOAD, manning the desk.

Beseech

www.last.fm/music/Beseech/+wiki

Swedish Gothic Metal/Rock band. They Started out in Borås (near Gothenburg) in 1992 and after creating a demo they became involved with the underground scene. In 1995 they recorded their first album, "...from a bleeding heart", but due to the label having financial problems it was not released until 1998, under the label of Metalblade. In the mid 2000 they released their second album, "Black Emotions",and from that point their carreer took off. The next albums, "Souls Highway" (2002) and "Drama" (2004) showed that the line-up changes affected the music in a way that many liked and others criticised. In 2005 they released "Sunless Days" propably their most mature album.

In autumn of 2006 the band announced that Beseech will be put to rest for good, "we have grown apart from each other as persons and we have different views of how we want Beseech to work as a band

In 2007, the Beseech website anounced that their members had formed two new bands. The Mary Major (who contains 6 outof the 7 bandmembers) and Those We Do Not Speak Off (with the remaining bandmember).

Leaves Eyes

www.last.fm/music/Leaves+Eyes/+wiki

World history set to music, seasoned with legends, love and passion – no less could be said about the second Leaves’ Eyes album Vinland Saga. Vocalist Liv Kristine and Co. (a.k.a Atrocity) embark on a mystic journey. Leif Erikson’s legendary voyage to Greenland in 1000 A.D., which consequently ended in America according most historians, is depicted by Leaves’ Eyes through atmospheric Metal, Rock and sensual ballads. It is a story marked by powerful riffs, melody and string arrangements, which represent a colorful bandwidth of musical styles, truly adequate to the very concept of the album itself and never concealing the Nordic origins of the singer. "I found my inspiration for many of the pieces in the Norwegian art and folk music, as well as in Celtic melodies," explains Liv Kristine. She knew from the very beginning that a special approach was needed for such an ambitious musical enterprise: "I absolutely wanted to work with actual classical instruments for Vinland Saga to do this great story justice."

Rammstein

www.last.fm/music/Rammstein/+wiki

Rammstein is a German band formed in 1994. Their musical style, which they have dubbed "Tanz-Metall" ("Dance Metal"), incorporates elements of metal, industrial and electronic music.

The Band
Rammstein took their name indirectly from the western German town of Ramstein, site of an airshow disaster in 1988. The band's signature song, the eponymous "Rammstein", is a commemoration of the tragedy that took place at the Ramstein Air Base. The extra "m" in the band's name means that it translates literally as "ramming stone" or "battering ram", reinforcing the style of music the band plays. Even though the lyrics are in German, the band has enjoyed success outside of Germany, in Europe - especially eastern Europe, Russia, North America as well as Australia, New Zealand and even Japan. With the album Reise, Reise (2004), they became the most successful German-language band of all time internationally.

Therion

www.last.fm/music/Therion/+wiki

Therion is a Swedish symphonic / orchestral / operatic metal band that started out as a death metal band. The band's name is taken from the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion (a reference to Aleister Crowley). However, the name itself originates from the Greek word therion (θηρίον), which means beast, in reference to the "beast" of the Christian Book of Revelation. Therion was founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. Beginning as a death metal band, they later turned to combining orchestral elements with their metal music, employing heavy use of choirs and classical musicians, not only as additions to but also as integral parts of the composition.

Therion's music takes its themes from different mythologies and is based on concepts ranging from occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings. The majority of their lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge, of which Johnsson is a member. The band has seen many changes in line-up and style throughout its history.

Korpiklaani is the new name of the band previously called Shaman, that was formed by Jonne Järvelä who still remains the mastermind of Korpiklaani. In contrast to Shaman that recorded songs in the original Sami language, Korpiklaani record most songs in English. Lacuna Coil

www.last.fm/music/Lacuna+Coil/+wiki

Taken from Last.fm
Lacuna Coil is an Italian gothic metal band formed in Milan, Italy, in 1996. The name means an "empty spiral". They were formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal, counting various musical influences as doom metal and progressive metal.

Lacuna Coil's music is inspired by gothic and romantic imagery, using melodic guitar lines, and alternating heavy and light vocals. According to themselves, the band is influenced by Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh and Type O Negative, among others.

Lacuna Coil have been gaining increasing fame in recent times not only due to their music, but also because of the sex appeal of their lead singer, Cristina Scabbia. She has appeared in countless music magazines and even on the cover of some European Maxim magazines. Along with Nightwish and Arch Enemy she is bringing some femininity to what has always been a male-dominant genre.

Xandria is a band, founded in Bielefeld, Germany, in 2000. The band's music combines elements of doom metal, gothic metal and symphonic metal.

"We want to give our audience courage - on their way back to everyday-life - to manage to also there stand for their feelings and to be strong enough to get through all pains and obstacles."

The female vocalist and pianist is Lisa Middelhauve.
