Introduction

Since 1990, Swedish goregrind/grindcore band Regurgitate has been spewing horrific, raucous, icepick-in-the-ear sound to those brave--or stupid--enough to listen. Arguably gods in the hardcore world, they actually have a 46-band tribute album to them that was released in 2001. The audio incarnation of a classic splatter-horror film, their sound is characterized by unintelligible lyrics that are screamed so hard they're gurgled, bass drums that roll to a nearly constant thunder, and turn-it-up-to-eleven guitar distortion that's reminiscent of a running chainsaw. As a collective consequence of these attributes, every track--I wouldn't call them songs--sounds nearly identical, manifested in a short but forceful blast of noise that evokes thoughts of violent and energetic imagery such as an exploding car bomb or an erupting volcano. Indeed, the brevity of the tracks is a feat in itself: Of the 63 tracks on "Effortless Regurgitation," only one (#56, must be their power ballad) exceeds two minutes and 40 tracks are less than one minute.

I will tell you right now that I don't like this garbage at all. I am not and never will be able to listen to music like this because it just doesn't appeal to me. What drew me to this band was their use of graphically descriptive imagery in their song titles (which include some very obscure medical terms, so have a dictionary handy), as well as their disgusting album cover art. I first purchased their 2000 release "Carnivorous Erection" for $0.99 at Hastings just because of the bizarre cover art (do yourself a favor and look it up on iTunes). However, since "Effortless Regurgitation" (which is actually a reissue of the early '90s "Effortless Regurgitation of Bright Red Blood" but also includes their original demo and some various other tracks) contains a greater number of tracks, I've decided to use it for list purposes so that you have a greater understanding of what this band is about. To give you a brief idea, the intro is audio from the movie "City of the Living Dead" a.k.a. "The Gates of Hell" directed by the legendary horror mastermind Lucio Fulci. In this particular scene a girl regurgitates her own guts, and on this track you get to listen to it without visual aid, though I've added the YouTube video if you're so inclined. That particular scene is the visual embodiment of the band, and is the movie equivalent of what they try to express with their unappetizing sound.

So grab your dictionary and security blanket, keep that gag reflex in check, and send hate mail to the band, not me.

Actually, my last name is Wyrsch, but Doc, my speech teacher in high school, used to call me V.I., as in V.I. Warshawski, Kathleen Turner's eponymous detective character from the crappy 1991 movie (based loosely on the book series). Unfortunately it stuck and all my friends called me that from then on. Doc used to ask, "Is that V.I. like in V.I. Warshawski? What's that V.I. stand for?" To which, before the class could continue, I would be required to respond, "My name." Apparently this is a line from the movie. I don't know because I've never actually seen it.
