movies to see: July 2007

I am not an anime geek, but I still love Ghost in the Shell, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. If only they had made "Dreamscape" with Dennis Quaid animated...

This is the sequel to last year's Night Watch. While full of visual power jabs, it's a a safe bet that this is not for types who like tidy scenes with plenty of exposition between characters.

I don't care how many Napoleon Dynamite reviews I see. Jemaine Clement is hilarious and you can find him on HBO's "Flight of the Conchords" as well.

Those who have followed Wes Anderson and the Wilson Brothers as long as I have will understand how long this has been in the making. It will probably never play here, but I am glad it Luke was able to make it.

I love Chris Eigeman. Check out his performances in Whit Stillman's "Metropolitan", "Barcelona", and "The Last Days of Disco"


This movie is based on the book by Daniel Menaker

I have been a fan of Danny Boyle's since I saw "Shallow Grave" in 1994.

I am hoping there is at least as much blood as there was in "The Proposition", also starring Danny Huston. This film is based on a graphic novel by Steve Niles.

I think the Bourne series, with the help of Doug Limon and Paul Greengrass have been Matt Damon's best movies so far.

Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors, despite what his critics say about his repetitive plotlines and formulaic characters. I am also looking forward to his production of "Fantastic Mr. Fox" next year based on Roald Dahl's novel.

Q: how many times has this man had a gun pulled on him while he was working?
A: a lot

I know, I know. The trailer makes me a little nervous to be honest. But Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, and he took a long time to approve this book's adaptation. If you have never read Gaiman, check out Good Omens (w/Terry Pratchett), Neverwhere, or his Sandman graphic novels. Trust me, he is a genius.

With the His Dark Materials series, Philip Pullman has bridged the gap for all those books that delivered a thinly-veiled, treacle-covered message about the virtues of Christianity. Praise be. Plus, Daniel Craig + Nicole Kidman
