Introduction

I gave this list as an introduction to a class in college. The scary thing is how little the list has changed.

1

Original Star Wars Trilogy (This is one movie)

I was 4 when Star Wars came out (5 when I saw it on the '78 rerelease). It pretty much consumed the next 6 years of my life. When I went to college I would argue that it was a pivotal cultural moment for my generation. I feel vindicated because the media has bought into that. Just watch the Star Wars Legacy on History Channel. By the way, I like "Empire Strikes Back" the best

Caddyshack

I realize that this is such a stereotypical choice but if you think about the comedic power in this movie it is almost underrated. They had to remove the focus from the caddies and put it on the stars because they all brought their A game (cliche).

First is Chevy Chase who had yet to really break out in film. He had hits with Goldie Hawn but he invented an archetype that he would later perfect in "Fletch"

Second is Rodney Dangerfield he had conquered stand up and his late night appearances had made him a very famous. He basically plays this character in every one of his movies.

Third is Bill Murray, his role was to be small but they added the scene with the plastic explosive and the scene with Carl and Ty. This is his first big movie also.

Fourth is Ted Knight, I realize not a lot of people on this site have ever seen Ted Baxter or Two Close for Comfort, but Ted Knight played assholes awesome. In this movie he really gets to let loose and the more you watch the film his performance is really the glue.

Goodfellas

This came out my senior year of high school. It is still the best mob movie ever. All the guidos I knew in college loved this film. Still looks great. The Sopranos wouldn't exist without this. Scorsese really is awesome at using the soundtrack, just watch Henry Hill's last day with George Harrison, The Rolling Stones and Harry Nilson sounding so ominous

The Indiana Jones Trilogy (Specifically 1 and 3)

I know what you are thinking "Shawn this is another 3 movies", I still consider it one movie. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is the best action movie for 10 year olds ever made. Nazis are the best movie villains ever. "Raiders" played for over a year at the Petite 3 in my hometown. I saw the movie 5 times in the theater. We went on the one year anniversary because it was so good. I took my German immigrant grandmother and great-grandmother to see it. My grandmother was upset that the Nazis were portrayed so badly. Go figure. The second is just OK. The third is very good with Sean Connery giving a wonderful comedic performance, along with Denholm Elliot. Again Nazis are the villains. They are fantastic.

The Towering Inferno

Irwin Allen's spectacular, over the top, masterpiece. All new disaster flicks wish they had the star power of Newman, McQueen, Holden, Dunaway, Astaire, and OJ Simpson. This movie was on TV all the time when I was a kid and then late at night in high school. It is still great. I met Robert Vaughn (the senator) when I was in college and all I wanted to talk about was this, Superman 3 and The A Team. I think he wanted to interject that he was the Man From Uncle. Sadly he is now the man from the Hurtline. The sets are really fantastic also. I am sure this movie will be remade and that is sad, because it will star McConahey and Foxx, not Newman and McQueen. Steve McQueen has been dead for almost 30 years and he is still cool enough to be in commercials for Mustang. Amazing.

Dazed and Confused

This movie had come out in the spring of my junior year. Nobody saw it in a theatre. Then I rented it. I watched it twice. It really summed up the Midwest. I felt like it was my high school and helped explain things to my Eastern collegiate friends. The amazing thing is that Wooderson (McConahey), O'Bannion (Affleck) and a girl who walks in front of the camera (Zellwegger) were the big stars. The guys are not very good actors and she is like the least good looking girl in the movie. How could the gal who played Jodi Kramer not have a career. By the way, this movie is still funny, truthful and the tunes sound great. Just remember that Mitch Kramer is now 28 and has 2 kids, has the same haircut and weighs about 40 more lbs.

Great list. Good Fellas and Caddyshack are definitely on my list of top movies. Come to think of it I need to get that list out of my head and on to the site.

Always liked Indiana Jones 1 and 3 better than 2.

Ted Knight is the best! "The world needs ditch diggers too."

I do have to give some love to "Temple of Doom," since I think it was the first of the Indiana Jones I actually saw when I was pretty young, and Amrish Puri (a Bollywood legend) scared the shit out of me as Mola Ram, as did his henchmen and the cheesy but then-scary heart removal scene. And you get Shortround, who incidentally is also Data from "The Goonies" from the next year! "Cover your heart Indy!"

I still say "Easy like pie, Indy" to people. Of course, they look at me funny.
