Introduction

This is a list of those movies that you've never heard of... but must add to your Netflix list immediately. Some of these are edgy or strange - but all stick with you for a few days... or years!

Bob Roberts (1992)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0103850/

Bubba Ho-tep (2002)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0281686/

Cult-favorite Bruce Campbell slaps on the sideburns and plays the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley who is confined to a nursing home that's haunted by ancient Egyptian curse. Along comes JFK (no, really!) played by Ossie Davis (no, really!) to help him save the day. Totally camp, totally Elvis, and totally Bruce.

4

Cinema Paradiso (1988)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0095765/f

This Italian best-foreign-film Oscar winner is a classic for all movie lovers. It traces a young boy's journey as he falls in love with the movies. This movie will make you laugh, cry and love the movies.

5

Heavenly Creatures (1994)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0110005/

Peter Jackson (of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) took on the story of two Australian girls that got so caught up in their fantasy life that they plotted to kill one of their mothers. Based on a true story - Kate Winslet shines as a psychotic and obsessive teenage girl. I told you it was a true story...

6

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0248845/

This movie may not be for everyone, but if you love a good musical, good rock music and a wild ride, check it out. John Cameron Mitchell wrote this fable of a young East German boy who becomes a trans-sexual to escape his Communist country with a horny GI - then the wall comes down. A tragedy! Lots of wigs, outrageous outfits, and sensational songs.

7

Millions (2004)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0366777/

This family friendly fable focuses on a young boy and his brother who find a bag of money (British pounds) right before the currency swaps to Euros. They have to spend the money quickly - and discover a lot about themselves and their family along the way. This is a great film.... heart-warming and very funny.

Near Dark (1987)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0093605/

Grimy and gritty vampire horror flick with Lance Hendricksen and Bill Paxton from the late eighties. Adrian Pasdar gets caught up with this vampire family and eventually has to break free to save his younger sister. Nice alternative to the big budget horror flicks. Bill Paxton is inspired in this one!

9

Orlando (1992)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0107756/

Virginia Woolf's tale of a young nobleman who is commanded by Queen Elizabeth to stay forever young. Tilda Swinton plays Orlando from a young man through his transition into a woman and into the role of a mother in this fantastic story. The landscapes are lush, costumes couture and Tilda's acting is superb.

10

Perfume: Story of a Murderer (2006)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/

Follow the story of a Grenoille, a man with a superior 'nose', who is obsessed with creating the perfect perfume, at any cost. Set in pre-revolutionary France, you can practically smell this movie as it is completely encompassing in it's detail and ambiance. Unique story... and crazy ending! Based on the book by Patrick Suskind.

11

Pi (1998)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0138704/

Darren Arnofsky paints a paranoid portrait of a man's discovery of the universal patterns of nature and the responsibility that goes with the knowledge. Intense and dark, this movie will haunt you - especially the lobotomy-by-electric drill sequence. You probably won't get it the first time... but you'll want to go back and see it again. .

12

Russian Ark (2002)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0318034/

A 19th century French aristocrat, notorious for his scathing memoirs about life in Russia, travels through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and encounters historical figures from the last 200+ years. The amazing part of this movie - is that it was shot in ONE TAKE! From start to finish, all of the actors moved together from one set to another - and performed the movie in real time. Fascinating!

13

Six Degrees of Separation (1993)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0108149/

One of Will Smith's earliest roles - playing a con man who ingratiates himself into a white upper-class family. This movie showcases his real talent - and so early in his career. Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland are fabulous, of course. This one is a nice surprise.

14

Swoon (1992)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0105508/

The story of gay lovers Leopold and Loeb in the 1920s - and their trial for kidnapping and murdering a child just for their own amusement. Very stylized cinematography and a different take on the historic case. The acting isn't the best - but the story is interesting and the visuals are impeccable.
15

The Commitments (1991)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0101605/

Alan Parker directs this tale of a rag-tag Irish soul band and their struggle to make it big. They get the chance to play for Wilson Pickett and fall apart in the process. The lead singer of the band (Andrew Strong) was only 16 when this movie was made - and his voice is phenomenal. Great soundtrack, very funny and charming movie with characters you want to fall in love with.

16

The Cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover (1989)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0097108/plotsummary

The wife of a barbaric crime boss engages in a secretive romance with a gentle bookseller between meals at her husband's restaurant. Food, colour coding, sex, murder, torture and cannibalism are the exotic fare in this beautifully filmed horror/love story. Helen Mirren looks amazing - watch for her clothes (and the entire movie color pallette) to change as the characters move from room to room. A visual feast.

17

The Fog of War (2003)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0317910/

Eleven lessons from the liffe of Robert McNamara. This documentary sits down with former Secretary Defense as he reflects on the lessons he has learned about war and warfare. Very insightful, Robert McNamara had a truly remarkable view of key events of the 20th century.

18

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0110074/

Joel and Ethan Coen directed an inspired Paul Newman and Tim Robbins in this fable about one man's big dreams... and what lies on the other side of them. A naive businessman, Norville Barnes, is in the right place at the right time and becomes the president of a large corporation as part of a stock scam. His hapless sincerity wins over the tough-talking journalist that tries to blow his story wide open. This film is a true classic. Every scene looks like a movie poster still... this one gets better and better each time you see it!

19

The Magdalene Sisters (2002)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0318411/

A moving story based on the real convent in Ireland that housed "troublesome" girls through the 1990s. The girls were treated like prisoners and kept for life even through they had not broken any laws or, in some cases, done anything more than a little harmless flirting. Rent the DVD and watch the extras for interviews with former residents of the convent. Heartbreaking.

20

The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0120483/

My all-time favorite Bill Murray flick - where he hapharzardly backs into impersonating a hitman - and on his birthday no less! He is really funny in this slapstick, laugh a minute movie. BEST CAR CHASE SCENE EVER!

21

The Messenger (1999)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0151137/

Action movie starring Milla Jovovich as Joan of Arc. This is a nice characterization of the heroine - emphasizing her psychological problems as an explanation for her heroic and mad behavior. Milla's performance is one of her best... and the scenery and setting is top notch. This one is much more than just battle action flick.

22

The Visitors (1993)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0108500/

Silly time-travel movie stars Jean Reno (the Professional) in a very funny turn as a 11th century nobleman who has landed in the present day and smack dab into his great-great-etc granddaughter's life. Very silly, very slapstick, and very French fish-out-of-water tale. But despite all of that, it's also very charming and funny. Nice alternative cotton candy for your brain.

23

Turtles Can Fly (2004)

www.imdb.com/title/tt0424227/

Set in Kurdistan, close to the Turkey-Iran border, Soran is a 13-year-old boy who orders other children around as he installs an antenna for villagers keen to hear of Saddam's fall. These remarkable orphan children live as a vagabond tribe on the outskirts of town - and deal with the world around them in various ways. A very touching and tragic story - this world will haunt your conscience for some time. A devastating but amazing film - and funny too.

24

One more... Dancer in the Dark

www.imdb.com/title/tt0168629/

A legally blind woman is framed for an alleged theft in this tragic tale. Bjork plays the woman who lives very much in her head - imagining her life as a Hollywood musical - and copes with her debilitating disease. Her story takes a tragic turn and her life spirals out of control in this death-row musical of sorts. Depressing as it is, this one is worth seeing for the great performances by both Bjork and Catherine Deneuve. Seriously... this one will leave your jaw on the floor at the injustice.
