Introduction
I started my love of underdog sports hero films when I was a kid growing up in the 70s, watching The Bad News Bears. Not only did I learn that in the end, if you're heart is there you'll always win the big game, I learned that even a beer-guzzling coach means well. Here's a list of my favorite underdog sports hero films throughout the years.
1
Remember the Titans
We have to give it up for this one. It has it all, a great soundtrack, a great story to reel us in, and of course Denzel. He showed those kids how to get along in football and life.
2
We Are Marshall
Could there be a larger underdog. The whole team including coaches, players, and boosters dies in an airplane crash on the way back from a game. They fight the odds to put a team back on the field the following season.
3
Rudy
If Marshall University is the largest underdog team, the largest underdog player is Rudy. Not having near the grades are football playing ability, this guy dreamed of being a Notre Dame player. He moved in and camped out until he got a chance, a small chance, then took advantage of every single moment, until he eventually got to play football.
4
A League of Their Own
These women changed history and perhaps just a little bit of baseball as well, as they ultimately proved to Tom Hanks that yes, there can be crying in baseball. With starring turns for Hanks, Gene Davis, Madonna, and Rose O'Donnell, you just can't do much better.
5
Radio
The character Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays here is perhaps an unsung underdog sports hero. He becomes part of the team, whether the team likes it or not, and no one would have ever given him the credit to take this as far as he did.
6
The Final Season
The town learns it will end its longstanding baseball tradition after one final season, and it's up to Sean Astin, a girls' volleyball coach, to lead them there. Yet another true story.
7
The Bad News Bears
The one that started it all, and so much so, that the name of the film has become a colloquialism for underdog teams that just won't quit.
Nice list! I liked Radio the best of all these. It had a little different spin than the others, so it stands out from the rest.

Hi, Laurabelle!
I am a sucker for underdog happy endings.
I know you have seen this. Supposedly there will be a movie someday....

Rudy is the bomb! Getting a little dusty in here just thinking about it.
What about Hoosiers?

Rocky! Rocky!

Kathy, I'd never heard about that story from the youtube clip. That was amazing and certainly seems perfect for this genre. Tin Cup and Hoosiers I've never seen believe it or not, but I think I'll add them to my queue at Blockbusters. And how could I forget Rocky? Here's my review of The Final Season if anyone is interested.

Miss LB, great list. Now I've got the Titans song running through my head... "we are the Titans, the mighty, mighty Titans..."
Rudy and Radio would be my faves here.
Are you related to kathybelle? I've heard that the Belle family is quite an enjoyable and talented group.

No, we're not related, but it does make it interesting, doesn't it, that we're both "Belles"?
