Introduction
They started slow and not very dangerous. Then, they started to eat people and got really scary. After that, they got a little faster, learned to talk and eventually learned to communicate and organize.
<sniff> How quickly they grow up...
1968 - Night of the Living Dead
Sure, there were some "living dead" movies before this...but were they really scary? No, I think not.
1978 - Dawn of the Dead
Romero decides to have a little more fun with the undead. This time in a mall.
1979 - Zombi 2
Wacky Italian zombie movie -- some have said it was a prequel to "Dawn of the Dead." It was banned as obscene in England where it was known as "Zombie Flesh-Eaters." Here in the U.S. it was simply called "Zombie" with the tag "We are going to eat you!"
1985 - Day of the Dead
More Romero - this time in an underground bunker with lots of toys. First time anyone thought of "domesticating" zombies...poor Bud.
1985 - Return of the Living Dead
Dan O'Bannon (Alien, Blue Thunder, Total Recall) takes a stab at the genre and comes up with a total winner. Origin of the zombie groan, "Braaiiiinsss..."
1985 - Reanimator
A Lovecraftian Herbert West learns to bring back the dead with a funky glowing serum. What could possibly go wrong with reanimating dead tissues?
1988 - Return of the Living Dead Part II
One of the few sequels that outdoes the first. Campy zombie action. The two original protagonists return to find themselves surrounded by talking zombies. They even get a chance to ask the zombies why they eat brains. Oh, and don't incinerate zombies...bad idea.
1990 - Night of the Living Dead (in COLOR!)
The only real thing to note here is watching this makes you feel like Charlton Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes.
"Dang you Tom Savini! Dang you all to heck!"
"Dang you Tom Savini! Dang you all to heck!"
1992 - Braindead
Peter Jackson (yes, *that* Peter Jackson - LotR, King Kong) does his thing with the living dead and it's darn fun to watch.
1994 - Dellamorte Dellamore (The Cemetary Man)
Most underrated under-seen zombie movie ever. Amazing to watch. Starring a little known - Rupert Everett.
2002 - 28 Days Later
New life for an old genre. Thank goodness.
2004 - Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Best remake ever.
2004 - Shaun of the Dead
Best zombie comedy ever.
2005 - Land of the Dead
Notable because it's Romero. Other than that...not so much.
I love Braindead (a.k.a. Dead Alive)! Sumatran rat monkeys and lawnmowers were never the same...

Are you saying that every single zombie movie made was "the best"???

oh silly Chloƫ...
There are sooo many more zombie movies. For instance, not on my list are such classics as:
- C.H.U.D. (zombies or politically incorrect vision of homeless people, you decide)
- Return of the Living Dead 3, 4 & 5 (stinkers)
- Bride of Reanimator
- Zombie High
- Zombies on Broadway
- I was a zombie for the FBI
- Erotic nights of the Living Dead
and a whole list is over there on wikipedia

"Shaun of the Dead" is one of my all-time favorite movies. And I LOVE "28 Days Later." Definitely my favorite non-comedic zombie film.
