Introduction

The saga reaches a midway point...

41. King Kong

I never saw the original until after college, thank you TCM. They always showed the 1976 remake with Jeff Bridges. That looks just as dated as the original now. I have not seen the Peter Jackson version for the simple fact that it is 3 hours and the original is 90 minutes. What could they have added? Adrien Brody's nose? A restrained Jack Black? I hope Jack Black isn't scared by the fact he has the same role as Charles Grodin, this could be an omen. The context with which this movie must have been seen in 1933 is probably just as important as the special effects they used. Do they even run the 1976 version after 9/11? Anyone, Anyone?

42. Bonnie and Clyde

Awesome movie!!! This and "The Graduate" are the beginning of new Hollywood. The cast is made up of all stars now but at the time unknowns. Gene Hackman almost became Mr. Brady after this movie. Crazy!! The violence is very stylized and the two leads are likable but very edgy. Faye Dunaway's Bonnie always weirded me out. Watch for Denver Pyle or "Uncle Jesse" as a sheriff. This should be higher in my opinion.

43. Midnight Cowboy

The only X rated movie to win an Oscar. Would this even be R today? Jon Voight is awesome as Buck the gigolo from Oklahoma and Dustin Hoffman makes a loser very endearing and sad. The party scenes in this movie are pretty funny now. You also get a shot of Brenda Vaccaro's boobs. Not to shabby. This should also be higher. What is with this list. I like alot of these films better than the top 20.

44. The Philadelphia Story

I have seen bits of this. I don't like the Hepburn/Tracy or Grant or whomever films. I never have. Cary Grant sort of escapes me also. This is the type of movie that an actor from today will talk about to seem smart and totally lose their audience, ie. Clooney or Roberts.

45. Shane

I really like this film. It has very adult themes told through the eyes of a child. It is very influential to new Hollywood. I have heard Scorsese and Spielberg speak at great lengths about it. Jack Palance is a very frightening villain and Alan Ladd looks great in White. The shootout at the end is great especially when they slo-mo the gun spinning. Very cool. I highly recommend this for viewing by 9-11 year old boys. Once they get caught up in the story it would be a very good movie experience, better than the drivel directed at them now.

46. It Happened One Night

Never seen. All I know is Clark Gable wears an undershirt while undressing and undershirt sales the following year were through the roof. Hollywood doesn't have near the power they used to. Don't believe the hype this would never happen now. Even with the Jesus, excuse me, I phone.

47. A Streetcar Named Desire

We had to watch this in high school and all I really got out of it was my friend Cory's mother's name is Stella. He caught grief until we graduated. Brando was very buff back in the day. Tennessee Williams wrote some interesting plays but all I can ever think about is what a train wreck his own life was. Treat Williams reprised this role when he was starting out, he is pretty much this generation's Brando.

48. Rear Window

Great Film, see it today as "Disturbia". Grace Kelly is gorgeous and Jimmy Stewart is great as the lead. The filming techniques employed are very eyecatching. Especially the murder scene. It is funny that Raymond Burr is the killer when he would spend the rest of his life portraying Perry Mason, the man who could get anyone off and probably inspired many self absorbed boomers to go to law school. My generation goes to law school to get paid. We find no higher meaning in helping others. Thanks Mr. Burr for your contribution to society.

49. Intolerance

All I know is this is D. W. Griffith's other movie, I have scene parts of "Birth of a Nation". I may be wrong but I believe that Mr. Griffith was a Klan member. Good for him. Hollywood isn't as diverse today.

50. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…

My friend Scott and I watched this on video, neither of us having read the books, we didn't realize that it just ended. We were pissed. At least "Star Wars" had a satifying ending. I will make no bones about the fact that I am not that into these films. I found this quite long. I liked the second one better and I still haven't seen all of the third. This is way to high though. There is an animated version of this film from the late 70's and some of the scenes look like they were lifted from it for Mr. Jackson's film. The animated version is spookier also, just like late 70's teenage animation should be.
