31. The Maltese Falcon

Another very good film noir, that is more action and thriller than other noir. Stars Bogart and the creepy Peter LOrre. My favorite memory of this movie is an episode of "Night Court" where a lunatic was running all over the building speaking dialogue from the movie and Judge Stone had to talk him down by filling in the line that went next. Would they even attempt an episode of TV like this now? The movie is very good, rent if you haven't scene. There is a real bang-bang quality to the dialogue.

32. The Godfather, Part II

If you have read previous lists, you already know how I feel about this film. Superior in everyway to the original. The Corleone backstory with DeNiro is fascinating. The drama around the revolution between the brothers is awesome. When Michael kisses Fredo, it is just great drama. John Cazale, Fredo, only made four movies, "The Godfather I and II", "The Deer Hunter" and "Dog Day Afternoon". That is having a great agent. The real bonus for the ladies in this film is the Corleone's attend a donkey show.

33. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Now this is another good film. Who doesn't love McMurtry? We watched this a lot when I was in high school. The Billy Babbitt scenes have always been very disturbing to me equally funny though are the scenes when they go outside for a boat ride. If you look closely you can see Christopher Lloyd and Danny Devito. This is just all around good stuff.

Come again? I know this is the first feature length animated film and it was scary for it's day. But come on?!! I liked "Pinocchio" better. I also think that "Fantasia" is more groundbreaking. They should just lump all the old Disney animated films together. I feel bad for kids today. When I was a kid the Fox Theater ran Disney films only at the theater. I got to see all of these on the big screen. Very cool for me. I just never liked this film as much as others and I think I speak for a lot of people. My last shout out is for Disney's "Robin Hood" from 1972. This is great for kids. A better conversation would be everyone arguing over what classic Disney film is there favorite.

35. Annie Hall

I don't understand Woody Allen or pretend to think he is that great. If someone from my generation could explain it to me, I wouldn't be so negative. I do like parts of "Bananas" and "Sleeper". Everything just seems so quirky to me. It is an entertaining film but who can buy Woody as anything other than the guy who married his adopted daughter? I do like "Zelig" also. Very creepy the way it is shot.

36. The Bridge on the River Kwai

This is one of my favorite films. I really dig William Holden and when given the right material he can be great. Kind of like a manlier version of Jack Lemmon. Sir Alec Guinness won an Oscar for this but I always thought that the real story was driven by Holden and Jack Hawkins. The payoff at the end of this film is good and really shows how when given no hope men can be made to do bizarre actions. Similar to First Blood Part II: Rambo, seriously it is.

37. The Best Years of our Lives
I have only seen parts of this film. I know it takes the gloss off the American Homefront. I also know one of the main actors lost his hands in the War and plays a character going through the same thing. I don't really want to watch something like that. This is another movie that Hollywood says is great but you don't know anyone who has seen it.

38. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Good movie. "Badges, we don't need no stinkin' badges" is from this film. Good character actors like Walter Huston really shine in this film. Bogart was really just a great character actor who kind of exploded into a star. Brad Pitt is a good character actor who for some reason is a star. Bogart just makes better decisions as leading man. I would recommend watching this.

39. Dr. Strangelove (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)
rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…
Peter Sellar's tour de force. Sellers is so great in so much stuff but here he gets to go crazy. As the president he is so droll, like Adlai Stephenson, and as the doctor he gets to act out all kinds of stuff. You get iconic shot like Slim Whitman riding the bomb. The humor may have passed on this black comedy but Kubrick's directing and the wonderful actors really make this worth watching. Peter Sellers has so many wonderful parts that it really should be another list. Hey that is an idea.

40. The Sound of Music
This is my grandmother and great-grandmother's favorite film. They used to show this movie every year around Easter. I think they still do on some stations. The movie is beautifully shot. I think that this is a better film that "Singing in the Rain". I went to Salzburg and this like their "Shepherd of the Hills". All the touristy stuff has a tie in to this movie. This was the highest grossing film of all time before "Jaws". Weird huh?!!
