21. Chinatown

Good choice. This movie should be much higher. Sort of symbolizes the new Hollywood of the seventies. They take an older story form, film noir and update it. Nicholson is good but John Huston is better as the main villain. It is really to bad that Roman Pulanski molested an underage girl and had to leave the country. He would have benefited with better access to talent than actors who are willing to move to France to work with him. I would like to give a recommendation to Pulanski's "Frantic" as another choice. Not "Chinatown" but a good story none the less.

23. The Grapes of Wrath

I haven't actually seen all of this movie. I read the book. 20 minutes of either pretty much sums up with life with my grandfather has been like. Might be an interesting experience to show this to wealthy suburban teenagers and explain that this was only 2 generations ago.

22. Some Like it Hot

This movie is always rated high. According to the AFI, this is the best comedy ever. I bet no one has seen it. It is good for 1959, but comedy doesn't age well. It is basically "White Chicks" or "Sorority Boys" with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis instead of the Wayans. Marilyn Monroe was pregnant with Arthur Miller's baby during the shoot so she is more voluptuous than ever. This doesn't help. I think everyone should watch this, but it doesn't translate very overrated.

24. E.T.-The Extra Terrestrial

When I was 9 this came out and I saw it at the North Town 4 sitting on a arm rest. I thought this movie was scary, especially the beginning. Is that weird? I am not quite sure if they make movies like this for children anymore. It was frightening, funny, emotional and action packed. All I could handle in the fourth grade. I also remember this movie as the film that introduce Drew Barrymore to alchohol and we have had to now put up with almost 20 years of her obnoxious preaching about how hard her life was. No one cares, your youth couldn't have been harder than a kid growing up on 8 Mile Road.

25. To Kill A Mockingbird

rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…

We watched this in the 7th grade. It was alright then. I sometimes think that movies are said to be better because the book they are based on is important. According to the AFI, Atticus Finch is the greatest hero in movie history. Only in America can lawyers be heroes. I think Gregory Peck is very good in this role but I like him better as Dr. Josef Menghele in "Boys from Brazil". This opinion must say something frightening about me or how I view lawyers.

26. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Hokey Capra film that should be remembered better for the fact that they made this into a sitcom starring an orangutan in the Jimmy Stewart role in the late 70's. Nothing like network television to raise the bar. If Mr. Smith was helpless during Roosevelt's presidencey imagine what he would do now? Lock and unload on Congress, maybe?

27. High Noon

This is a very good western, but not that great. I like "Shane" a little better. Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly are well cast but the movie sort of plays now like a drawn out 30 minute episode of "Gunsmoke". If you haven't seen it I would recommend this, remember Grace Kelly is a princess.

28. All About Eve

rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…

I am pretty sure I have seen most of this movie. I just remember that once Betty Davis started to lose her looks, she just wanted to play crazy bitches. If I remember correctly the subject matter was risque for 1950, probably something like a female wanted to enter the work force.

29. Double Indemnity

rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…

The best 40's film noir in my opinion. Stars Barbara Stanwyck of "The Big Valley", Fred MacMurray of "My Three Sons", and Edward G. Robinson of short, ugly ethnic looking actors who would never make it today. The movie is still topical dealing with insurance fraud and infidelity. Of all the movies in this specific 10 I would see it first if you haven't. Fred MacMurray played such nice roles when he got older you really get a feel of his acting chops here. Similar to when Kevin Costner is allowed to be creepy, it seems so much more pronounced.

30. Apocalypse Now

rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds…

I realize this opinion may get me in trouble but why is this movie so high? It cost a ton for it's day, took 3 years to complete and sort of rambles on for almost 3 hours, but for some reason people think it is a better movie every year. Don't get me wrong there are some good scenes and great lines, but "Tombstone" has that also. I recommend "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmakers Apocalypse" instead. It is a behind the scenes documentary about the shooting made by Coppola's wife. The scenes where she goes over his infidelity with Playmate Cynthia Wood are very humane. Just a note, women will fuck anything with POWER. This fat, Italian fucks one of the hottest Playmates of the pointy tits era. HOW!!!! He made "The Godfather". I thought that the documentary was much better than the film. I would recommend watching the documentary, then waiting like a week to watch the film. I don't know why but I think that makes sense.
