Introduction
The AFI just updated their top 100 this week. This is my opinion on that list.
1. Citizen Kane

They re-released this film when I was a senior in high school. They made a big deal about it. In college, we had to watch it in film class. It really is unlike anything that had been done before it. It is the first movie I could really relate to that is really old. The two things I remember about it though are the wonderful "Simpsons" episode that parodies it and Orson Welles weight. When I was a kid there really was nobody on the planet who had creatively flamed out like Mr. Welles. He was this huge fat guy in a beard hosting documentaries on HBO about Nostradomus. I do actually believe that this movie should be first.
2. The Godfather

This isn't even the best Godfather or the best mob movie. It should really be known as the film that brought Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and John Cazale to mainstream prominence. It revived Brando's career but the movie feels dated and plodding compared with the tighter, better paced sequel and doesn't hold a candle to Goodfellas or even Casino and Donnie Brasco.
3. Casablanca

This should be 2. They have been trying to remake this movie for sixty years but it can't be done. It is chock full of lines, that everyone knows and it is immensely entertaining 60 years later. Watch this if you have not seen it.
4. Raging Bull

Isn't it amazing that Scorsese had to wait until 2007 to win best director. Seriously. From 1973 to 1985, no one made more daring pictures. This is really his masterpiece. DeNiro's best role also. The reason films like "Cinderella Man" didn't work because Ron Howard is really a B- director and he isn't creative enough to invent the angles that Marty uses. This may be high but is really the best picture by the best overall director of the new Hollywood.
5. Singing in the Rain

Seriously, this is where these lists go wrong. This is no one's favorite film. This is also no one's favorite musical. Gene Kelly is more famous to me for "Xanadu" and hosting "The Muppet Show".
6. Gone with the Wind

This should probably be higher. I have watched this film and it is every bit as long as the book, but the parts that move still move today. Great lines and has some serious racial justice undertones with a the black characters being the moral guidance of the film. My grandmother will still get excited talking about this picture the way I feel about Star Wars. I also like the fact this is the book that Pony Boy has read to him in "The Outsiders" and they act as if it were the most violent and risque thing.
7. Lawrence of Arabia

This movie looks awesome on a big screen. The story is rather long and there are absolutely no chicks in this film, which is odd considering it stars that pantydripper Omar Sharif. I do like this film but it may be high. I like Lean's "Bridge on the River Kwai" better. Still a much better epic than what is being produced today.
8. Schindler's List

This is too disturbing. I don't do well at awful things so I when I watched this I just cracked jokes to alleviate the tension. Good movie, but not that good. Jaws is a much better Spielberg story. What kind of person would list this as there favorite movie? Himmler, Goebbels, Menghele, or Borat?
9. Vertigo

Here is another overrated film. Most people would list "Psycho" or "Rear Window" ahead of this for Hitchcock. I have seen this movie only once and thought it was rather dull until the last 5 minutes. I remember it as very quiet. That isn't much of a recommendation.
10. The Wizard of Oz

This would be minus the Pink Floyd soundtrack. When I was a kid they ran this movie once a year on CBS. It was a big deal. I loved this movie and I really don't believe that many kids today wouldn't like it. The songs and dance numbers are very entertaining and the flying monkeys are actually still bizarrely frightening.
