Introduction
It occured to me today that i am always saying "when i was doing (fill in type of job)" and how annoying it must sound. i have dabbled in so many things in attempts to figure out what it is i am really looking for. and the nice thing is that every single one of my experiences (although may have felt off-track at the time) has informed my work and ultimately lead me to where i am today. that is a good thing. because i like where i am!
** and i'm pretty lucky that i have rubbed elbows with so many insanely creative people.
gallery assistant
age 17 - 21
hung work, data entry, but mostly just ran around at the openings pretending that i had something to do with any of it. could usually be found at bar, if not behind it.
paper sales girl
in all honesty, this was perfect for me at the time. not because i loooove selling paper, but because i found myself working with really amazing creative people, and we formed a family and they are still the most talented people i know.
store manager
believe it or not i loved this job! it was more creative than one would imagine. i got to dictate how my store was going to look and be run. if you know me, you know how much this suits my personality. of course, i aspired to be more than a retail manager, so poof...i swung my magic job wand and i was off to another thing
print studio monitor
this even sounds like a job handed out to students. its up there next to "hall monitor," except i got to do my "monitoring" in the middle of the night, and with music blasting. very nice job.
Film Assistant
travel included. I enjoyed being an assistant and am grateful for all the benefits, and for being surrounded by creative types. but as much as i wanted to continue to do this work, i never really got bit by this bug. at least i haven't figured out what my place in the film world would be. yet.
design intern
does this count as a job? i worked at things, and i showed up in the morning with coffee like everyone else there...
Typesetter
My first publishing job in Manhattan. It was something straight out of Office Space. i had a desk next to a woman who collected kitten calendars, and who kept tabs on who in the office had had a cold in the last month. Everytime i walked down the starch, over-lit hall to fill up my mug with hot water from the communal water dispenser, i'd say to myself "this is not what i signed up for."
Photo Editor
Yes, this was definitely what i signed up for, and WAY more. I learned how to edit photos on a laptop while riding in the back seat of a mini cooper speeding through new york traffic on the wrong side of the street. My boss taught us to never waste any time, and that in fashion, every second counts. for him, it did at least. i was just along for the ride. (and i got to meet gwen stefani)
Production Artist
Independent publisher. Very slow paced.
Trade Manager (letterpress company)
Ahhh. This is where i have landed right now. I love the people i work with. i have a foot in a million different places, so i am never at a loss for stimulation. we travel. we are surrounded by beautiful work and tons of color. I think this whole time i may have been looking for more color.
