Seemingly common things I know nothing about

Introduction

I am singularly unenlightened about many things. There are things that every one knows and is talking about but me. I have no doubt that the reason would be my lack of interest in whatever the unknown may be. A list seemed in order.

Sirius Radio

I know about Sirius Black from Harry Potter; Harry's Godfather. But I'm truly puzzled my this radio gadget. Some of our friends have it for their 24 hour preferred radio pleasure. They don't listen to the radio for 24 hours. It will probably end up just like cable, 500 channels and nothing to watch (or hear).

The Secret

Every one at my salon was talking about this for a couple of months. Evidently if you have positive thoughts you 'attract' what you want to you, due to the "Law of Attraction". Hmmm....I'm going to positively think of a Volvo SUV in my driveway. Think it will be there to take me to work in the morning?

American Idol, The Batchelor, Survivor, etc.

Everyone is talking, I hear but don't listen. These people need to live in the real world. Evidently the American Idol losers are coming to our fair. Why would anyone want to be traveling around in a 'loser' show?

IPod thingys

MP3 players, IPods, nano somethings totally discombobulate me. Are they all the same thing? Why does someone need them? If all of your music is on the computer why can't you just play it there when you are studying? Can't you play the CDs you like in your car?

Hip Hop music

With a 20 year old in the house and car I hear noise but don't get it. I thought fifty cents was money; humps, bumps, junk???, Daddy's gonna put some chains on mama and let her sleep in the lake? And it is all thumpy, I don't hear any actual music.

Fashion

ayn had a whole list of jeans, never heard of any of them. Kelly listed 10 fashion brands, I think I've heard about Marc Jacobs. I'm just a Land's End girl, this is all beyond me.

Celebrity news

Who is "with" whom or not; mostly don't know and truly don't care. And who are all of these new actors and actresses? And does anybody else think that the Spider Man guy and The Day After Tomorrow guy look alike?

Types of bread

Ciabatta, challah, pita, focaccia, panini, brioche just to name a few of the bread I see on menus. And what is bruchetta? And now there are a whole bunch of new cheeses I see around.

Country Music

I am truly and happily ignorant in this area. For years I referred to "that striped shirt guy" (Garth somebody) and I never have figured out who Carrie Underwood is but I hear her name all of the time. And is the Reba on the TV the same one with the big red hair?

Wii???

Why???
We have the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Game Cube, XBox and now there is a Wii. Kind of a stupid name...

A ton of online stuff

Hey, I'm excited, I watched a YouTube video all on my own the other day. I registered for Digg, I have both a MySpace and Face Book page, I am a great Googler and I practically live on OML. That is as good as it is gonna get. How much more should I expect a TV screen thingy with a typewriter keyboard attached to do?

Ring Tones

What's the point? Why can't the phone just ring? I was eating my lunch today and out of nowhere someone's purse started singing 'Feelings'... The lady couldn't get the phone out, the thing went on and on. Sometimes you have to pay and other times you get them free from your friends. AND now I find out you can assign different songs to different people. Geez, just let it ring like a phone and then answer it and you will know who it is, plus the number thingy on the front tells you who's calling.

Shortcuts and initials - Added 8/24/07

All of the little LETTERSSTRUNGTOGETHER to make a point. LOL, TMI, CU, etc.
The other day the girls referred to a THO. I asked what that was. They wouldn't tell me; to embarrassed. I called the son at his bouncer job, he told me. It's a good thing to know. Communication is so difficult these days.

Kids

No, I know about kids.

This item means that if I really cared I could ask either of the kids and one or the other could explain it all to me.

The Point? I really don't care enough. I'd prefer to read my books, make lists & comments and poke at Ol' Hippie. However, if you would like to enlighten me, I would love to hear your explanations.

Nuff said.

Time? As in amount of time in a day? Or, the more depressing, amount days I have left total? Hmmm...

Well, I agree that you don't really need to know about most of these things. Some of them baffle me too. I do have to admit though that those "ipod thingys" are quite magnificent and amazing little gizmos. You can put hundreds (or even thousands) of songs onto a little gadget no bigger than a deck of cards more or less, depending on the type of player you get, how much you are willing to spend, and how much storage it has. Yes, you COULD listen to music on your computer instead or on cds in your car, but an "ipod thingy" you can take with you ANYWHERE you go, literally. Just tuck it in your pocket or hang it around your neck and you can be listening to your favorite music while waiting at the doctor's office, doing your grocery shopping, walking through the park---you get the idea. And instead of shelves of albums (ooops, showing my age)I mean, cds you can store all your music in this tiny little space. I have a Creative Zen V Plus that I absolutely LOVE. Best thing is you don't have to listen to anything except what YOU want to listen to. Your music all the time. No country or hiphop, or anything else you don't like, to worry about. No radio DJ's blathering on, and no commercials like you would have on a radio. Another feature available on some is the possibility of downloading audiobooks to them so if you want to listen to someone read you a book instead of music, you can do that. Also there are podcasts you can download to it too, if you are interested in those.

As for the WII, my kids have one and I have to say they are kind of cool too. The biggest way they differ from other videogame systems is that the kids actually have to get up off their backsides and move around to make things happen on the game. The sports ones are interesting---the kids have to mimic the moves they would make as if playing tennis, bowling, baseball, etc. with the controller in their hand to play the game. (It is even entertaining to watch them play these imaginary games as they jump about the living room.) At least they are exercising more than just their thumbs. I know, now you're going to say why don't they just go play those sports for real instead of mimicking them with the WII. I guess the thing is they can do this at home, without worrying about the weather, or getting a ride to where the action is, or finding a friend who is free to play at the same time, and so forth.

I love this! Gave me quite a laugh.

You're not missing anything by not reading "The Secret." Your comment about imagining the Volvo pretty much sums it up. Let's teach people with no work ethic how they can sit around and imagine things being great and wonderful while not actually doing anything to acheive that goal.

Thanks for the laugh.
