Introduction

This country is inundated with taxes of all sorts and some pay alot some don't pay any, some are able to weasel out of them and others seem to attract the IRS like flies. Some of us spend endless days trying to figure out what we owe and others spend thousands to a supposdley tax expert so we can get part of the our money back. Our current tax system is insane and is so complicated that most of us are victims of it.

1

Abolishes the IRS

need I say more! OH maybe just one thing--How much would this save? Obiviously these folks would be out of a job, but I don't think for long as they would assimilate into the private sector.
2

No more april 15th deadline

April 15th will be like any other day and previous weeks and months won't be filled with the anxiety of that doomful/stressful day.
3

Every one pays their taxes as they purchase goods/services

What a simple and friendly way to pay. Everybody, which includes you,me,lawyers, doctors, criminals, drug dealers, congress men./women, tax evaders, CPAs, website owners, long shoremen, stockbrokers, retired rich, Vistors to the US, anyone that buys anything, pays their fair share based upon their purchases. (There are currently a number of the above that pay no taxes which will now contribute)
4

Cost of goods and services remain the same

No embbed taxes. In other words the loaf of bread you buy includes the income taxes, social security, medicare taxes of the the employees and owner of the grower, miller, trucker, merchant. Since these taxes will be ablolished the cost of goods will be lowered and replaced with 1 tax, approxmately 23%, when the loaf of bread is purchased.Hence the cost of goods remain the same.
5

Tax Prebate- big win for poverty level

Every family/individual will recieve a prebate (rebate of taxes paid for the neccesities of life) up to the poverty level income. in other words those that are at or below this level will pay NO TAXES. Currently those making less than poverty level still pay social security and medicare (7.52%)
6

Big money stays in US

Currently those that have the "where- for-all" ship there large sums of money off shore helping other countries investments all for the purpose of avoiding taxation. Remove our conventional taxation system and the money moves back to US where it will help grow our economy.
7

Underground markets wil pay tax

Even though these may be illegal (drug dealers come to mind), the folks running these underground markets pay little or no tax. With the fair tax when they buy goods (boats, luxury yachts, expesive autos, fabulous beach homes, expensive clothes, jewlery and servcies) they will finally pay their share. This will add to the treasury as these folks typically do not pay any by virtue of their livelihood.
8

The US will become more competitive in the world

Currently embedded taxes are in all services and products we purchase, consequently these embedded taxes increase the products we ship to other countries making us less competitive.
9

More jobs in the US

As more money is avaible to companies and individuals, economic growth would ensue.
10

One of the things we exactly want the Government to do

Pass the FairTax bill.
11

Greatly reduced book keeping

No more keeping receipts , think about companies that spend millions and millions of dollars on record keeping just to justify deductions and expenses. This money will be put to more productive use.
12

Tax lobbyists will not be around to influence congress members

There will be no need for these folks, no special interest groups looking for tax loop holes that help very few. Taxation will show no discrimination.

A lot of people make this mistake. The "fair tax" or national sales tax scheme currently being proposed is very tough on poor people and others who must spend all of their money to live. Further, contrary to what they claim (flat 23% sales tax) they are using bogus math. Say you pay a $45 tax on a $150.00 purchase; we all know that is a 30% tax, but the "fair tax" guys say that only $45 out of $195 is tax and anyone can see that this is 23%. To quote King George II, this is fuzzy mzth.

Also, say you want to buy a $500,000.00 house; do you just add $150,000.00 to your mortgage?

How about a $40,000.00 car? $12,000.00 up front, right?

There is a lot more. Please read these:

Very interesting reading both on this list and the links provided by Ol Hippie. I think one thing that we can all agree on is that there needs to be massive simplification. Simplification would reduce many costs. Simplification would allow people to more directly see/feel their taxes. Simplification would give us a shot at something more fair. Simplification would would make it hard to create loopholes.

Having a easy-to-understand tax system seems to be a good start with lots of benefits for everyone, no? Who has the balls to make such a thing happen? Is it only a pipe dream to even imagine that such a thing could happen in our government? If so, that pisses me off...

There is also some books on the subject. I'm not biased either way, just aware of some info.

Wow KB I was with you right up to the "indentured servitude" provision.

I love a flat tax..........on everyone, corporations and rich people alike.

If you would love a flat tax you would go orgazmic for the fair tax. It makes those that currently pay little or nothing finally pay and pays to all a prebate which bascially does away with tax on the necessities of life. Contributions to social sec and medi care would be increased meaning a more solvent system for us all.

I occasionally listen to Neal Boortz and have been tempted to purchase the Fair Tax book by Boortz and John Linder. I just don't know if I could make heads or tails of it with the book.
