Introduction
This list is from personal experience. I lived in Boulder/Denver for 15 years growing up. Went to junior high, high school and CU there. Moved to San Francisco in 1991. Moved back to Denver in 2002. Got the hell out of there for good in 2003. Now I live in a "real" city... back in SF.
1
Sprawl....
The shear amount of ridiculously named tract housing is mind boggling.
2
The Pollution
When you think of Denver, you may have the idea it has really clean Rocky Mountain air... you would be lung-cancerously wrong
3
The Politics
Two Words: Red State
4
The Traffic
It's not just the freeways that are chocked with over-sized SUVs, they have some of the most congested streets (with the longest damn stoplights)
5
The Dryness
It's like desert-dry in Denver most of the year. Summers have tons of high 90s-100 degree days. But the winters are where you really pay. I would wake up most mornings with a dry throat, nose, eyes, etc. The average humidity indoors in the winter is around 15%. It starts to mummify you within days.
6
The Malls/Shopping Centers
Denver has like 50 malls and 100s of other chain-store shopping centers.
7
Chain-Stores/Restaurants
It is very very difficult to find mom-n-pop stores and restaurants. Whenever I visit there i want to fire-bomb every Fudrucker-Chillis-TGiFridays-Ruby Tuesdays-Beniganns-IHOP-Dennys-etc... only problem is there would be no places left to eat...
8
The amount of SUVs
Come on, I get it... it snows in the winter... they are needed to drive in the mountains... I have never owned an SUV and lived in Denver for over 16 years total... YOU DON'T NEED THEM... just learn to drive better.
9
Geographically Isolated
The closest major city is 600 miles away... and it's Kansas City! Enough said.
10
I'm an Ocean Guy, not a Mountain Guy
Well, thank you birdman, I took a little heat a couple days ago for saying the same things in a comment.

i gave ol' hippie the heat and while you've definitely spent more time there than i have (you lived there for 15 years, i've lived in vail for 2) i have to respectfully disagree. although, it is disappointing that there isn't a better mass-transit system...still, viva la denver.

Dallas has more in common with Denver than Vail... I really don't understand how living in Vail gives you any insight into living in Denver.
