Introduction

I grew up with a 1950s mom. FYI the moms in our neighborhood were not the Donna Reed, June Cleaver type wearing pearls and shirtwaist dresses while cleaning at home. They mostly wore just pants (or shorts in AZ) and cotton tops. These were ladies who were raised during the depression by parents who knew that their offspring would have to be strong to survive. Times have changes and we now have Parents Magazine (among many others) and Dr. Dobson. Today's parents are much more concerned with their child's ego than the 50's Mom was - as you shall see...

If you don't quit crying, I'll give you something to cry about!

Huh!! Hiccup, ok.
2

Were you born in a barn? Close the D**n door!

Oh yea, mom's cussed the hell and damn words at their kids then. Wouldn't you think that the mom would have known where the kid was born?

Either eat what I put in front of you, or go to bed hungry!

Now moms cook specifically to please the children or especially for the children. We ate what Dad liked.

Do you think I'm made of money or Do you think money just grow on trees!

Actually there may be parents who still say this today, just without the explanation point.
5

You'd lose your head if it wasn't attached!

This and the next one might have been original to my mom.
6

If you had a brain you'd be dangerous.

I heard this a lot.
7

EAT! There are children starving in China.

I asked once if I could mail it to them. That did not go over well.
8

Just wait until your Dad gets home!!

Yea! Like he ever did anything. She was way scarier. And I loved her and I wish she were still here and had gotten to know my children.

My mom used to say, "people in hell want ice water."

These are funny. My mom always said, "If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you???"

Another: If wishes were horses; beggars would ride.
My kids are, "like wouldn't they wish for a car and drive?"
