Introduction
Without this computer game, where would we have learned such important lessons like Manifest Destiny, cholera, or how to cross a river using a Native as a guide? Here are some facts and memories about this classic game.
1
Fort Wala Wala
How can anyone forget this place? With a name like Wala Wala, it’s hard to forget. By the time you’ve made it on the trail to Wala Wala, you’re almost there. It’s a good place to be. You can read all about the real place here: http://www.williamsteamhomes.com/visitors-guide.php
2
Cholera
It was always disappointing when one of your children get Cholera. But what exactly is cholera, anyway? Cholera is bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea. Usually carried in infected food and water, cholera can be deadly. This is a pretty serious disease for a kids game. But we didn’t know any better.
3
Broken Axel
When you’re wagon breaks an axel you can expect to lose some time. You’ll also have to fix it, so if you’re a carpenter that helps. If not, you’ll need some money to buy a new one at the nearest shop.
4
Independence, Missouri
Where the game begins! Independence, MO sounds like the perfect place to begin a journey of Manifest Destiny. Just like Wala Wala, this place really exists. Learn all about it here: http://www.ci.independence.mo.us/
5
Soda Springs
Did anyone feels completely refreshed when you make it here? I know I did. But what the hell was Soda Springs? According to this website: http://www.sodaspringsid.com/, it’s a classic Oregon Trail destination.
6
Wandering Oxen
Where did these Oxen end up? Every once in a while one would always disappear and delay your game. Maybe they all met up somewhere. Probably Soda Springs. Maybe if you get there you come upon a field of million missing oxen. Imagine!
7
Hunting!
Going hunting is the only real action you’ll find in this computer game. But going after squirrels, deer, and buffalo is pretty fun. Of course, if you shoot a buffalo, you can expect a ton of food. None of which you can carry back.
Great list, Cory! My kids liked the hunting part the best. I think once they figured out they were actually learning a thing or two from the game though, they lost interest in it. They decided it was just a trick---someone disguised a history lesson as a videogame. What a foul deed, indeed! LOL
