12 Nasty and Disgusting Canned Foods

Introduction
"Eat what you can, and can what you can't." That's something my grandmother used to say. Well, I certainly CAN'T (and WON'T!) eat these foods, so I guess I'd have to can them. Although, the can that comes to my mind for this food would be a trash can not the types that are used here. Bon appetit!

Cuitlacoche (also known as Huitlacoche, Corn Truffle, Maize Mushroom, Corn Smut, and Mexican Truffle)
I have lived all my life in an area of the country filled with cornfields. When I was young, my parents grew a garden that included corn every year. I have seen what this fungus looks like, and it is not anything I would EVER put in my mouth.

Potted meat

Natto (fermented soybeans)

Pickled pork rinds
Silkworm pupas

Birds' Nest Drink

The nests are collected by hunters on precariously tall ladders and then dissolved into soup."
Well sure! Regurgitated gelatinous bird spit is just the beverage I'm looking for to quench my thirst.

Surströmming (soured herring)
To prepare this traditional Swedish meal, herring from the Baltic Sea are gutted and tinned in brine, then stored somewhere (preferably warm) for several months. Its pungent aroma makes dining alfresco an absolute must. Locals recommend opening the can under water whenever possible to contain the tantalizing odor of rotten egg, rancid butter and vinegar that results from the fermentation process."

Balut

A well-aged balut lacks feathers, beak and claws (all the tasty bits), and instead provides a palatable rich embryonic broth, the creamy yolk (and of course, the fetus), sure to satisfy even the most ambitious appetite. Bottled balut, sold at various Filipino grocers, comes in three flavors: brine and two spicy sauces."

I'm not going to eat it. You try it.
Let's get Mikhail!
He won't eat it. He hates everything.
He likes it!! Hey Mikhail!
I always check 3 things in the morning: Banking at Home, my email and OML.
Maybe the word disgusting in the title should have been a warning to pass until this evening.
Now I get to picture these in my mind all day at work. I'm going to go back to the little girl in the reindeer suit to see if that will help.
Good list for later in the day Miss Daisy - creative as always.
I checked out your blog, good stuff; hope every one else does.
I'm afraid there probably is no GOOD time of day to read this list. It will either spoil your appetite if you haven't eaten yet, or make you lose your lunch if you already have. It might be a good thing for me to print up and hang on the refrigerator though--help me stick to my diet. One look at this, and I won't want to eat ANYTHING!
Having just finished my breakfast of scrambled baluts and toast with jellied eels, I think I'm done eating for today! 8~p
These are wonderfully awful.
Please look up 100 year old eggs - I don't think they are canned, maybe buried, but worth looking at!
I LOVE potted meat (Deviled Ham my favorite). Vienna sausage. I try to avoid any thought process when I have it smashed between two pieces of pasty worthless white bread and slathered with the hydrogenated white fat molecules of mayonnaise. Yummmmmmm. I save it for a treat.
:-) Good and gaggy, girl!
Kathybelle, I looked up the 100 year old eggs--downright frightening!

Tell you what, any potted meat or 100 year old eggs that come my way, I'll gladly send out to you in the Ozarks. :-D
Ol Hippie, you are mistaken. I still have many, many things to be grateful for every day. I just haven't been making lists about them on this site. I felt that perhaps some of the OML readers were getting a bit bored with my gratefulness. Also, many of the things that I am grateful for are private and probably not of much interest to others, I suppose. I have enjoyed visiting with you, as well, Ol Hippie. (I like that word a little better than sparring.) :-) I hope you'll stick around and keep coming back to OML. However, if you decide to move on, you will definitely be missed. :-(
Well done GD :)
Hope my repulsive list doesn't give you a setback with your health.
Unfortunately, this list brings to my mind the scene from the movie, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
"how are we today?"
"Better."
"Better?"
"Better bring me a bucket...."
