Introduction
Who says nonfiction books have to be dry and dull? Here's a list of excellent stories that all happen to be true. From science to religion to history, these are amazing narratives that read better than most novels. Check out one of these books the next time you're looking for a great story.
Measuring Eternity: The Search for the Beginning of Time by Martin Gorst
www.amazon.com/Measuring-Eternity-Search-Beginnin…
This book is a history of the search for the beginning of time. It seems unreal to believe that in the 17th century an Irish bishop insisted that creation occurred at the shockingly specific moment of 6 p.m., October 23, 4004 BC. Scientists' views on the beginning of time have changed significantly in the last 300 years and Gorst makes their journey both interesting and educational.
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
www.amazon.com/Pilgrim-Tinker-Creek-Annie-Dillard…
On the surface, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, tells the story one year outside of Dillard's home. Beneath the beautiful descriptions of the insects, animals and plants she encounters, it is an exploration of life, love and death. This book won the Pulitzer Prize.
The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe by Sarah Churchwell
www.amazon.com/Many-Lives-Marilyn-Monroe/dp/08050…
This book is an investigation into the many differing accounts of the life of Marilyn Monroe. Instead of adding her own theories or biography, Churchwell asks what the media's obsession with Marilyn Monroe says about our culture.
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
www.amazon.com/Tipping-Point-Little-Things-Differ…
While The Tipping Point may not be a single narrative, it explores a variety of stories where small actions had huge consequences. Aside from being an extremely popular bestseller, The Tipping Point is almost required for any conversation about trends, culture or society.
Diamond: The History of a Cold-Blooded Love Affair by Matthew Hart
www.amazon.com/Diamond-History-Cold-Blooded-Love-…
This book does an excellent job of both informing the audience and taking us on a wild ride through the world of diamond mining, the cartels and the history of some of the world's most spectacular diamonds. It is facinating to learn the diamonds are more common the granite and that most of the mystique surrounding the gem has been carefully created and maintained by a marketing machine.
