Introduction
a plug for my day job, which i love.
www.hellolucky.com
presses
our presses are old and beautiful german engineered heidelberg presses. and they are NOT attached to a computer.
treeless paper
we print on 100% cotton paper, so it's a renewable resourse. and soft as a baby's bottom.
impression
letterpress printing punches into the paper. it leaves a tactile effect you can feel. it makes the paper look soft and pillowy.
delicate
due to the nature of punching the paper for each ink color, we can't use gradients or large solids. artwork that works best is usually delicate and subtle, not loud and brash.
printers
our printers (...the people...not to be confused with the presses...) are skilled artisans. they are hyper-senstive to quality control and do an amazing job.
test of time
letterpress is one of the oldest forms of printing, dating from the 1400s.
labor intensive
this is probably not ideal in a world of "faster, cheaper, NOW", but it's SO worth it.
you all have a lot of great design. just checked the website. nice.

I don't know you at all really, but I really like your lists and THIS one in particular makes me like you a whole lot more! I have a love of anachronistic/mechanical things.

As a professional graphic designer, I can appreciate your love of this form of art. I have to do everything on a computer at work, so doing something creative with my hands other than typing or clicking is rather therapeutic. As someone who has done several linocuts and woodcuts, I can tell you there is nothing quite like the look and feel of a hand-pulled print!

right there with ya, man. i've been an art director for nearly 13 years. it's nice when you stumble onto something that has some thought put into it. too often, it's shyte (my work included).
